Rob, you are almost at go time for your big ride! Excited? Nervous?

The tank looks good. I hope she provides you with lots of miles of extra riding. I know stopping every 60+ miles would suck to fillup.

If you get back in time, are you going to the OKC Curiosity SC rally?

You have plenty of time. The rally is not until after you get back. It's the weekend of the 26th-28th.

Some of us are going to ride our scoots out there on Friday and back on Sunday. If you are not totally completely and absolutely freaking tired of riding, you should join us!

The first thing I thought when I saw this was Ford Pinto.. I suggest using it for a prank but do not fill that thing with gas.

no, it will carry gas this is not a joke, prank, and unfortunatley not a beer keg. actually it has gas in it right now.

many motorcyclists and scooterists carry their auxiliary tank in that spot.
check out www.tourtank.com

if i recall wasn't the problem with the pinto that if the blinker was on at the same time you were rear ended it created sparks that lit the gas?

The real problem with the Pinto was the fact that the top of the tank was actually the floor of your cargo area. When it split it sent fuel all over the inside of the car! Ford was aware of the potential disaster but decided that paying off lawsuits would be cheaper than doubling the sheet metal in that area. Turns out they were wrong.

I just checked out the website! Very cool! I had hoped to ride along on the Cannonball this year, but life got in the way. So how many miles can you go on both tanks? That tank doesn't look like the Tourtank that your link leads to. Did you give up on the back rest? I put a pack on my seat and leaned against that. The straps went under the seat so the whole thing raised up, seat and pack together. See you when you get to SF.

i'm not exactly sure what the range is so far.

i ended up not getting the tourtank and getting a less expensive alternative. but i wanted to show that other riders had similar set-ups

i did give up the back rest it was just too big and heavy.

i'll probably do something similar and put a bag between me and the tank

Nice! Coming from a guy carrying almost 11 gallons on his LD bike, you will appreciate the extra range.

Any modifications/additions to the seat?

Some LD tips I can offer:

1. STRETCH. Stretch while you're riding, at gas stops and any time you're off the bike. It's amazing how fast you'll cramp up.

2. Stay hydrated. Always keep a water bottle within easy reach. If you wear a full face helmet (which I recommend for LD riding) bring a Camelback or Platypus water carrier along. At gas stops, I alternate between water and Gatorade depending on the heat index.

3. Snack whenever possible. Big, greasy meals will put you to sleep faster than a Michael Bolton or Kenny G. CD. :D
Trail mix and beef jerky are the staples of a lot of LD riders. Power bars and Slim Fast (really!) as well. Try to eat fresh fruit when available. --especially bananas as they contain potassium and can help a little with the cramping.
If you must hit a fast food joint (many of us do) try Subway, or at least stay away from fatty burgers or anything fried. Go for the grilled chicken sammich w/lettuce and tomato instead.
Reward yourself with a Big Mac after the rally.

4. SLEEP WHEN YOU ARE TIRED. Even a 30 minute power nap will help.
You can't finish if you're dead because you fell asleep and ran off the road.

Best of luck to you. Can't wait to hear some great stories.
