Deadlights to LEDlights!

Post by olhogrider »

After hooking up the deadlights as running lights I was a bit concerned with the current draw. I ordered these. They are at least as bright as the incandescents I had in there.

The picture doesn't do it justice. The LED white makes the incandescent look kind of amber. I also added red sidelight LEDs where the rear reflectors were. I have reflectors on the license plate but these lights add a lot to the visibility. I may put reflective tape on the sides, as you are supposed to have reflectors, or maybe not

Pretty darn impressive! And I like the red ones, too. How about a little build info?

I already posted on the deadlight hookup. The bulb swap was simple. I wanted the rear lights to come on with the key like the deadlights, but couldn't find a power source so I ended up connecting to the license plate light. Splice, solder and tape. I also put an LED in the license light to keep the current draw to a minimum. While I was playing, I added the small light to the inside of the headlight and put a 55/60 watt bulb in the headlight.

Cool - I did the running lights already . Just wondering how you mounted the new lights in the side, and which ones you bought - I'm on the site now ordering the whites for up front. I also have the 55w up front, so I like the idea of less draw/brighter lights for the running lights.

Thanks

The red ones are stick on! I fed the wires behind the license bracket. I liked the diffuser lens. It makes them visible from most angles.

I love it! Any chance you could point me towards part numbers and a source?

(edit) Gawd, I wish I paid attention.... never mind on that last bit.

Still, good work!

(edit #2) yeah, so double impulse post aside, Part numbers would be greatly appreciated

The running light LEDs are very nice looking. Which bulb type did you purchase for yours exactly? I went to that sight in your link but there are like dozens of different types to choose from and I do not want to accidentally buy ones that are not going to fit in the socket or under the lense cover.

I'd love to see a pic from directly behind, to determine if the sideways red lights are a little bit visible as markers from behind. If not, one might consider bending the metal reflector bracket a bit to angle them rearwards about 30deg to make them visible from side&rear...

The LED's for the Buddy are bulb 1156.

Olhogrider- how much dimming on the running lights are you experiencing now that LED's are installed? I have the stock bulbs in there right now and when I crank my scoot they damn near go out!

Just thought I'd throw in... buy the led protectors while you're ordering. You need one for each light ($1.99). They're just an inline surge protector that goes on the ground side. I've already burned out two LEDs on my Rattler because I didn't get them (tailight and a turn signal).

I've been trying to get LED's for my deadlights but the vendor no longer carries the Matrix 24 LED bulbs. They have offered to ship the Matrix II 32 LED bulbs for the same price (or refund my $). But, the Matrix II are ~2 inches long. Does anyone know if these would fit in the Buddy's deadlights?

Based on my very scientific experiment (rolling a cardboad sleeve over the stock bulb, putting the lense cover back on, seeing where the sleeve stopped) the longest light you can fit in there is 2". That is at 1" diameter and TOUCHING the lense cover.
