A short story of terror from a newbie rider

Post by Becktastic »

I had my first ride in the rain the other day. It was sprinkling lightly after a monsoon as I headed up Mountain Avenue. I love Mountain, it has just one lane in each direction and massive bike lanes on each side. There are always tons of cyclists and people walking with dogs. It's just a pleasant place to ride. Due to the rain, there were less people out this day. Thank goodness...

I stopped at the light where Mountain intersects with Grant Rd and the whole street is a river from the previous monsoon. I'm picking the best path in my head while I sit at the red light.

The light turns green and suddenly this bozo driver from the back shoots up the left turn lane, using it as a -bypass traffic- lane and swerves around me creating a massive wave that soaks me from head to toe as I head through the light. WTF?! I am -pissed- and I try to catch up to him to get his license plate number, but he swerves into the -bike lane- driving past all of the cars lined up for the 4 way stop further up, runs the stop sign and he's gone.

That sucks! What a jerk. Rain gear is probably something you should consider investing in...

Welcome to the bottom of the road vehicle food chain!

Glad that situation didn't turn into something worse.

Ugh I hate the sticky sweaty feeling you get under rain gear. I much prefer being wet from the rain.

But street water is a whole other thing...ick

I had a full face helmet and my Cortech jacket (without the waterproof liner in) so really only the waist down got extremely wet.

How can you post a link and then tell someone not to click it?!

Now I feel the need to scrub myself with bleach.

I used to live in Tucson too. I know those streets and monsoonal rains. You might consider some riding gear made with Gore-Tex. It's expensive, but you might not be so wet and sticky when it rains. Unfortunately, it probably won't help you on those days when it dumps and then the sun comes blasting out. That kind of heat and humidity will defeat even Gore-Tex. In that case it's better wearing mesh and drying off by riding around.

Sadly that is REALLY something one needs to come to accept to a large degree as w/bicycling which I do a LOT of. Otherwise all that crap auto drivers do will eat your lunch all too often.

From the description of the jerk driver, it sound like he's a candidate for a Darwin Award -- which will take him off the road for good.

Alternately, he'll pull something stupid like this in front of one of Tucson's Finest and the system will put him out of commission.

BTW - my FroggToggs are cherry red. :D

ack. I hate the mountain / grant intersection. the lack of turn lanes there makes that intersection way dangerous w/ cars flying around other cars that are trying to turn left...

Be safe Beck!
