Post by sailortot »

scooter scavenger hunt week four- scooters and skylines
oct 5-11
this hunt ends midnight your time on saturday.

3 pt your scooter and a view of the skyline. it may be in the distance or nearby. if you live in a smaller town, take a picture of your scooter on main street.

1 pt if you are in the photo.
2 pts if something in the photo says the citys name on it (a bumper sticker on a car, a sign on a building, etc.).
3 pts if there are skyscrapers in the photo.
+2 pts if there are more than 10 skyscrapers in the photo.

NEW: if you take your picture from the top of a building (meaning you are ON TOP of the building), add 4 pts.

an example? you got it....

Image

bonus points: since this weeks challenge doesnt involve many points, i am offering a challenge for bonus points. take a picture with a gas station where the prices are clearly visible. the person who finds the gas station with the lowest price on unleaded gasoline will receive an additional 10 pts.

this is the last hunt under my mastership. thanks for playing along. the winner will be posted on sunday.

Just have to ask ... what constitutes a skyscraper? Not sure if the buildings in these parts really scrape the sky.
I suppose I should be upset, even feel violated, but I'm not. No, in fact, I think this is a friendly message, like "Hey, wanna play?" and yes I want to play. I really really do.

Okay, this is great because I was thinking of this very theme recently!

I'm not sure we have that many skyscrapers in LA! :)

just use your own judgment on this. for me to consider them skyscrapers, they would simply have to be taller than most buildings. anyone know the official rules on this?

p.s. if anyone has an idea for extra points on this one, please let me know and ill try to include them asap.

Small Towns with No SkyScrapers - and Bonus Points?

Post by MiguelATF »

Racenut wrote:The tallest building we have here is a 4 level parking garage. :D
I have to echo Racenuts minor gripe - it's awfully hard to play this game if you happen to live in a small town. He mentions a 4 level parking garage - in Talent, Oregon, where I live (population 7,500) there are no buildings taller then TWO (2) stories - and in neighboring Ashland there are only two buildings in the town (population approx 30,000) with elevators that go higher than 2 stories!

So....in the interest of evening the odds a little - or in the interest of making things more interesting for those of us who live in small towns or rural areas, let me suggest the following variations for Bonus Points -

If you can park your Scooter ON TOP of a building - an extra 10 Bonus Points (of course we have to be careful here because some people might go to extremes to do this)

If in the photo of your Scooter and the Skyline - you can incorporate a local Police Officer in Uniform - then I'd like to suggest 10 Bonus Points.

And finally....uhhh.....how about....if, in the background, on one of your tall buildings, uh, make that skyscrapers, you can include a Window Washer - on an upper story (2nd or higher) window - that should be worth....10 points?

What do you think, sailortot?

I'm often one of the voices of how tough this is on us little-town folks, but ST did it up right here. The "tough" item is only 5 points! And it's only really a 2-point ding if you can at least get your city's tallest buildings in the skyline.

Hey MiguelATF, maybe you could get her to accept natural skyscrapers ... bet you have some in view from Talent.

Wonder if a silo is a heartland skyscraper?

first of all, skylines can include smaller buildings. also, if you read the full points you might have noticed i made special mention of people in small towns (take a picture on main street). as for the suggestion, i am going to use it and twist it a little. thanks!

I want to make it clear that I was not complaining, I was just crackin a lil joke. I know that some of these just play easier for some than others. I recall the "Beach Theme" played out rather nicely for me. :D

Kudos to Scoot Lemont and now Sailortot for running the deal. I'm happy to play even if I can't score big everytime. :)

The other side is... if you live in a small town, you have a much better shot at the bonus
Being close to chicago, I dont have a chance at the lowest gas price... & I am OK with that

wikipedia wrote:A skyscraper is a tall, continuously habitable building. There is no official definition or a precise cutoff height above which a building may clearly be classified as a skyscraper. However, as per usual practice in most cities, the definition is used empirically, depending on the relative impact of the shape of a building to a city's overall skyline.

Any chance for bonus points for "unusual circumstances"? There were blue shop towels all over the ground ... And based on the odor and appearance of the towels, someone did not make it to the facilities in time.

I coincidentally took my picture from the same spot Newslinky did. Great minds think alike.

3 pt your scooter and a view of the skyline.
3 pts if there are skyscrapers in the photo.
+2 pts if there are more than 10 skyscrapers in the photo.

If you take your picture from the top of a building add 4 pts.

12 points for my first Scavenger Hunt submision.

The only Skyscraper in Ashland, Oregon!

Post by MiguelATF »

Well, I must say, first of all, that there are some G-R-E-A-T photos in this weeks Scavenger Hunt....and kudos to sailortot for thinking it up. I think it has brought out the best in some people's imagery....and it's kind of fun to see scooters against different skylines and/or backdrops.

So...here is my entry....not big on points alas but kind of a cool photo anyway.

3 points for my Scooter and a Skyline - in this case the skyline of Ashland, Oregon, the neighboring city to my own smaller town of Talent, OR.

Another 3 points for having a Skyscraper in the photo. The building in question is the Ashland Springs Hotel - the tallest building in Ashland and I believe the tallest building in the county - a historic building which actually measure I believe 8 stories....quite a feat for rural Oregon.

And finally an additional 4 points because this photo was taken from the TOP of a building - the building in question being a relatively tall (2/3 story) parking garage that sits in the hills above the main part of Ashland.

That makes a grand total of 10 points - and as a special visual bonus, you can see the beautiful clouds hovering over the Cascade Mountains which are looking quite pretty this time of year.

Time to go have a cup of coffee now...I think I'm suffering from altitude sickness brought on by being at such a dizzying height!

3 pts if there are skyscrapers in the photo.
+2 pts if there are more than 10 skyscrapers in the photo

= 9 points.

Sorry my camera managed to underexpose the foreground and overexpose the background o_O But there are at least 10 taller than average buildings.

I am impressed with how reflective my stripes were with the flash though :D

Sliding in under the wire, as usual.

3 pts -- Dorothy and the skyline
+2 -- Tulsa World newspaper
+3 -- skyscrapers
+2 -- more than 10 skyscrapers

10 points total

And, I'd be more than happy to take the helm for the next contest. I've already got three categories ready to go!

3 pt your scooter and a view of the skyline. it may be in the distance or nearby. if you live in a smaller town, take a picture of your scooter on main street.
3 pts if there are skyscrapers in the photo.

Total = 6 pts

This is a building on the main drag through Orem. It's only 7 stories, and wider than it is tall, but since Orem has an ordinance that only allows buildings to be about 2-3 stories tall, this one is a special case. It is a combination commercial/residential building that is not yet complete. You can only see about 1/3 of it in the photo. And of that, only about 5-10% is complete and occupied. The drop in the housing market has pretty much guarenteed that it won't be completed anytime soon.
