What's in your pet carrier?

Post by Scalpel »

If you're not riding a Stella, you probably have an under-seat storage area. Theoretically that space is for your helmet, but if you're like me it's packed full of all sorts of non-helmet crap. So what's in your pet carrier?

Two pairs of gloves.
Three (or so) microfiber towels.
Plastic wallet with insurance and registration info.
Homemade fleece neck gaiter that I've hardly used.
My awesome DIY cupholder.
A couple of bungees.
A couple Malossi decals.
A freelance contract for a magazine that I'd taken to Kinko's to fax, then left in there.
Tool and accessory kit containing: a decent screwdriver, adjustable wrench, two pairs of pliers, tire pressure gauge, center stand pucks, clip-on gooseneck LED flashlight, small Maglight, a pen, craft wire (left over from mounting Christmas wreath), and a pack of matches. In the side pocket is a bunch of coins for parking meters and several plastic Starbucks stoppers for to go cups. (This is all in a large, cheap pencil case from Target.)

Can you tell me why this is included?

I do remember there being reports of oil filters spinning loose. If this is the concern - is it possible to safety wire the protruding nut end of the filter, or the rim of the filter near the contact area? Would make for a more enjoyable ride if I had one less thing to check.

A zippered banker's pouch with 5 most common metric sockets, spark plug socket, driver, screwdriver, feeler gauges, a spark plug, crescent wrench and a small bit driver (the kind that ratchets like a socket driver), a digital tire gauge (tiny!) Registration/insurance in a zip-loc.
Bungee net and one medium bungee.
Loose bits of lint and length of 1/4" rope.
Disc Brake lock
All of that can be tucked into my FF helmet when I want to store that in there and my jacket goes in the topbox.... when it's warm enough to not wear it inside where ever I end up while I'm out and about.

That little air directing snorkel from the inside of my air-box.
Home made lapblanket or chaps, depending on the weather - or Frogg Togg's if it's warmer.

I always carry a messenger bag (thanks Williamsburg Outlet Mall!) just in case I need to expand, but I never wear it on my back... unless it's not got anything in it. It get's stuffed in the PC if I'm not headed to work, otherwise that's where I put my lunch bag.

I always carry my pocket knife (Leatherman Skeletool) so there's not need for a blade in my PC.

Oh, and my tank bag - which actually just ends up being my coffee mug holder, or takes the place of my bag in the summer time - it clips to the lunch bag and I sling it on like a satchel.

You can cram a lot of junk in and on a Blur, hehe. And that's not even counting the saddlebags for scooter grocery shopping.

Hahaha... I ride a pac-Blur. I need help.

I do check the filter every so often, especially for the first few hundred miles after an oil change, and so the wrench is just tossed in there in case I should need to tighten it. To me that's a lot easier than rigging any safety contraption!

The wrench is very tiny and easy to keep in my toolkit, so why not?

Just a heads up on a quick visual inspection for bolt (or filter in this case) tightness.

The scooters come with little yellow dots all over the place. Those are little indicators to let you know if the bolt has backed out during the course of riding. You can do the same thing with some cheap paint marker and the oil filter. That way you don't have to put a wrench on it to determine how fixed-on it is, you can just do a quick visual inspection then be on your way. Rubbing alcohol or "Goof-Off" can remove the paint when the oil is changed again. A moment extra of time (at oil change time) can save you hours (combined speculated time) of physical inspection with a wrech.

Every time I ride, I take a glance at the various bolts... if the dots don't line up, I know somethings up or at least loose - so I'll pull the bolt and thread-loc the hell out of it.

Just wanted to throw that out there.

Yup, great idea. I just do a quick test with my hand to make sure it's tight. I have never even used the wrench.

This sounds like a really great idea and a good part of any pre-ride safety check. But I have no idea which nuts/bolts should get this kind of inspection. I never noticed the dots of paint that you're referring to on my scooter.

Are there certain bolts in particular I should be looking at? (Wheels come to mind... wouldn't want them falling off...) I will go and get some paint or nail-polish and mark the bolts myself.

Thanks!

I don't keep much in there. I've been meaning to upgrade a few things noted below.

1) Scooter paperwork
2) Clear shield for my helmet (for night travel, it fits very well in there right in the front and upside-down.
3) The crappy tools that came with it (looking to upgrade these)
4) A black grabage bag, the big 55 gallon kind. I use this for duel purpose, when it's cold or raining it functions pretty well as a skirt while riding, when it's raining and I'm not riding I use it to cover my seat.
5) Assorted rocks used to weigh down the plastic bag when I'm riding, they're currently all over the place
6) Disc lock when I'm not using it.
7) Occasionally my gloves. I like to keep them in there during the day, but sometimes I'm in a rush and walk off wearing them.

Paperwork (in a zip lock baggie)
2 pair of gloves (winter and summer)
Scarf (in the winter)
Disc Lock
Cable Lock
Screw Driver
A couple bungee cords
Glasses Case with the magnetic sunglasses that go on my prescription glasses

A chihuahua carcass or two ... thus showing that the moniker "pet carrier" is a misnomer ... (j/k)

It was fun thinking about what I’ve collected:

Insurance card
Registration
Patch Kit including CO2
Bicycling (light weight) wind/rain jacket
Paper/shop towels
Original tool kit, not sure what’s in there – original spare fuses
Leather-Man, the channel-lock one
Bungee cords
Spare gloves
Phone – goes with me when I park
Writing pad and pen
Camera – comes indoors at night – it’s with my car when I drive
Bottled water
And a bunch of junk, papers, bags, receipts and who knows what else
Oh yea and a hidden $40.00 - jus in case

Helmet has been designated to the outside when I get off the bike
