I learned somethings today

Post by louie »

This might be a rant.

Am i on the blind side of buyer beware?

After hearing that my dealer no longer sells genuine and is no longer carrying/honoring/executing the warrenty on my buddy I called and spoke to the service dept manager (really nice and professional. i wish he'd not tried to sell me on the bike that will replace genuine on the floor). I asked lots of questions. I'm concerned, one reason for choosing the buddy was for the warrenty with a dealership 10 miles from my house. I don't tinker, i ride and love it. Most of us know the power insurance and warranties have to control our comfort level. I suddenly feel like i'm walking on a tight rope when i think of how stable my Buddy's health is.

Perspective, of course reminds me of what $3000 can buy me. Truthfully i've gotten my money's worth.
...but...
The point is I thought a deal was made where an agreed upon sum was given for an agreed upon product. The product included 2 years worth of worry-free maintanance and a few miles away for repairs. i don't make a lot, but i don't need a lot either and i don't want to make light $3000. Calculations are easy $400 of that $3000 was the "easy to use" warrany. Dang.

So I learned it's acceptable practice in the :?: motorcycle, auto industry not to pay the dealership to honor a customer's warrenty. If the dealer stops carrying the scooter the scooter company doesn't pay the dealership to honor the warranty. Dang. Is that right?

if something happened and i needed to use the warranty. I would have to calculate the worth of driving 300 miles and

I hope this isn't seen as bashing. I'm really surprised and maybe naive.

I certainly understand your frustration. I wouldn't mind doing some work on my scooter or motorcycle but my housing situation makes it very difficult. If either of my dealerships stopped servicing my brands, it would sour what is now a very sweet arrangement for me. I can walk to my scooter dealer and my motorcycle dealer is within 2 miles.

That said, you can't thwart change. Dealerships and franchises are changing all the time. Sometimes they sell, sometimes they buy, sometime they move. It's the old free market in action.

Your warranty is still in effect. It sounds like you've already found the next closest dealer and 300 miles is a haul. I don't know how long you've had your Buddy and how many miles you have on it, but here's what I'd do. I wouldn't sweat the warranty. Odds are, you aren't going to need it. If you do, you calculate whether or not it's worth your while to make the 300 mile trip. In the meantime, find someone local to do your routine maintenance. Do it by the book and keep all documentation, just in case you need to make a big warranty claim. That should cover your butt with a minimum of bother.

Thanks Andy, This does add up to be frustration. The info was new when i posted. I'm mostly over it. Perspective, you know, always puts lifes little possible glitches where they belong; rant, chill then go on.

I turned over 800 miles yesterday evening. So I've had the initial service taken care of at the dealership where i bought it.
I just loved the idea I was getting everything; a good scooter, much fun, small enough for me, priced right, brand new, and if needed a dealer up the street. OK, I know nothing to worry about probably .

The store is all European except Genuine. When it was the Stella it filled a Euro-isque niche. Funny thing is the service manager said they were having difficulty with Genuine because of problems with the Stella not the Buddy. Everybody loves buddy. The new brand they carry fits the Euro theme.

I had already decided to use a scooter shop openning in downtown. As far as I know this shop will be the first of its kind in Birmingham.
