Seat Reconstruction?

Hey all, did some light searching and couldn't find a relevant thread, so here goes.

I like the Buddy seat. I like the height, I like the angle, I like the color, I like the texture.

But after about 10 miles, I REALLY don't like the thin layer of padding the stock seat comes equipped with.

I commute 60+ miles a day on the Buddy.

You see my quandry.

Short of paying my first born child and my left kidney to get a custom seat built, has anybody else done anything to their seat to make it more liveable?

I know on the '08 Cannonball there were a few riders who duct-taped foam to their seats...but that's Cannonball. Would like something longer-term and better looking!

Besides, money should be spent on voodoo parts, not comfort, right?

...but they're frickin' expensive! The lambskin seat cover link posted above looks intriguing, I'll have to see if they have one in a Buddy seat size.

Anybody done anything homemade?

If you look around, I'm sure you will find a couple shops in your area that do motorcycle upholstery. They can take the cover off of your stock seat and add a layer of memory foam or insert a gel pad and replace the stock cover. The cost should not be over $100.

I used to do upholstery for airplanes. If there's an airport near you, check out the field. They're usually more willing to do motorcycle seats on the side and are accustomed to working with memory foam. A 1" layer of memory foam to replace the top layer of the seat's foam (provided you can just skim off the top 1" of the stock foam) would be an easy job for them and you could keep the stock cover. It seems the aircraft shops are more familiar with memory foam. Pilots swear by it.

If you're just doing solo, the Blackjack seat's pretty cush. I went on a 2.5hr ride this past weekend and my butt's just fine!

that's my Blur with the Pirate saddle and I absolutely love it but it's a Blur and it's way different then the Buddy. We also have Alaska Leather's (his & hers) sheepskins that we use on the Burgman and they do make a huge difference in comfort. On our 130 mile trip to the beach this summer we took the 'skins on the Genuine's and they made it much more comfortable, for the Buddy in particular - the Blur is pretty comfy now anyway. We bought the Large size skins for the Burgman and they fit fine. You can trim them with scissors if they dont fit to your liking.

I highly recommend Pirate - you dont have to spend rediculous $$ but you sure can make it custom for a few $$ more.
Alaska Leathers Sheepskins are a nice upgrade to a stock seat for longer rides.
