Only five more months to go

Post by hillbillybear »

Here's a thought. Only five more months to go until the heat really starts to set in. I've noticed that the folks who complain about the cold are USUALLY the same folks complaining about the heat. My wife is one of the exceptions. Hates cold but goes with the flow on the heat. I really admire the folks on the other thread who are riding to work and school in spite of the cold. That is neat. It seems to be a vicious cycle when there are many scooterists in one area, like Portland, Chicago, New York and Columbus. Do you guys ever get together in the winter and hang out and ride? Or is that just a summer time thing?

The Madtoto's have a standing 1pm Sunday group ride (weather permitting) year round. Unfortunately it has been either very cold or snowing like a mother this month.

I have ridden to work a few times this month but not since the 17th of Dec.
And the one nice Sunday we've had here this month in KC, we had company coming over so we were entertaining instead of riding.

Can't wait to ride again... perhaps a short (slow) spin around the neighborhood... just got to watch out for the snow (we just received another 2" this morning).

Also the Madtoto's usually have a benefit drive for Harvester's Food Bank during winter months (Jan. or Feb.).

I honestly can't say what I'd do if I lived in a much colder climate. I'd like to say I'd bundle up and ride as often as possible. I've always preferred cold to heat, though.

Big props to the cold weather warriors.

I've ridden in 100+ degrees heat. It sucks.

Lots of things in life sucks. Complaining wife, raunchy farts, stupid neighbors, no hot water, over/under cooked turkey, and lack of funds.

I do ride a bit in the winter months. I don't have a problem with cold temps, as you can always dress for or find a way to stay comfortable in the cold and wind . Not any different than snowmobiling in sub-zero temps. My main concern is with road conditions. There aren't many things worse than hitting a stretch of ice, particularly black ice, whether on 2 wheels or 4.

The scooter Gods have not been kind to us this winter in KC. To me, there is really only one season (winter) that riding is restricted around here. That's just 90 days, so we do have it pretty lucky. I'm praying we have that 50-degree warm-up the third week of January like we usually do. It's funny, there's a foot of snow on the ground today, and I think last year between Christmas and New Year I rode to Lawrence on a perfectly sunny day in the upper 40s.

Ice on 4 wheels requires serious caution. Ice on 2 wheels requires insurance.

That would be MEDICAL insurance.

I hate the cold, I hate cold weather riding, I like the heat, I like to ride when its warm, not so much when it gets hot, but hot is much better than cold.

I work out doors, I've learned to dress for the cold weather, no biggie, But when it's hot out, I can take only so much off!!!

Vive la cold weather..... Except for riding that is!
My son used to tease me that I didn't ride when it was below 65* Now I ride year 'round as long as there isn't any 'slime' on the roads.

I just can't handle the cold any more. My family lives in NC and I go to visit them every Christmas. And every year I come home with a cold.

I can handle the cold if there's no ice on the street. Right now, Tulsa is in the final throes (I hope) of our Christmas snow! Not that it couldn't snow again but, once this melts, I plan to get back out on the scoot!

It is rough sometimes though--you've got to bundle up big-time! Fortunately, my parka fits over my Corazzo shop jacket very well!

Here in Portland we DO get together for winter rides. They're not as often, and we don't get as many riders. But they happen. Its honestly not nearly as much fun to group ride in the rain. In just the cold can be though. Unfortunately, Portland's winter is hard to plan for when it's raining and when it's not :)

The cold weather has only stopped me a few times this year, but I'm still drawing the line when it comes to rain.

Not much in the way of cold down here in SWFLA, but last week it was in the forties, and that's pretty damn cold down here. It's amazing how three years ina warm climate, will thin the blood abit.
When I was in Chicago and it was 40 something degrees out i'd ride in maybe my under armor some gloves and nice socks, but since I been here, I put on the smart wool under armor new warmer gloves, pants and a fleece for my 20 min mornin ride...
When I go back north, i'm gonna have to get used to it all over again.
On the plus side Summer just doesn't seem as hot as it used to?

I've found that I prefer the heat--of which we get plenty. I'm not fond of smelling bacon frying when I sit down on the seat at 105 degrees but my hands are just too old to get as cold as they seem to nowadays. by the way alienmeat sack snow is in the forecast again for tomorrow & Sunday. Maybe we'll get more of that lovely sand on the roads--second place to black ice but worse than wet leaves. I rode all winter last two years but we're having a lot of teens and some single digits this year. It'll test the best of us.

:+!: A few weeks back we had temps from 15 down to 6 degrees. THAT was brutal. My commute is 25 miles each way, and I was pretty stinkin frozen at the end. It was a good excuse to buy some heated grips though ;)

Understandable :) I got the $27 ones posted in this thread. They're working great so far!

Did you get caught in the snow and ice storms that hit? I almost didn't make it down the mountain from Asheville to see my parents: big pine tree fell across my dead-end road! It was pretty crazy.
