Anyone moved or relocated their DOT blinkers?

Post by Tocsik »

Seems like almost all of the handle bar mitts out there don't accommodate the Buddy without cutting slits 'cause of the DOT signals.
Now, I could convert my running lights to blinkers and go ahead and cover them when I need to but I'm trying to avoid the extra cost of more adapters.

I don't like the product at Scooterworks; having your thumb inside more material does not appeal to me.

I found these Tucano Urbano covers (top picture) that state they are a universal model for handlebars with indicators. They cost 42.81 pounds (which is about $70!). Plus, they don't actually show them with indicators.

The ones I have my eye on are the Classic Moto Gear Scooter Mitt for about $30. They have a clear window to see your controls, too. They are the mitts in the bottom picture.

Has anyone relocated the DOT signals? Maybe to the front cowl or or on drop-down brackets?

When I had my Buddy I simply removed them and wired in the body-mount signals to work as signals. I don't know if it's still the same, but you simply remove the front nose, removed the headset, unplug and unbolt the DOT signals and discard, re-route the headset wires back down into the nose cavity and plug them into the existing plugs hooked to the body-mounts.

Had to replace the bulbs with DOT bulbs from AutoZone and I was done.

Yeah, I did the same as Keys because the DOT signals are hideous. I realize some folks think the DOT signals are safer due to their height, but that hasn't been my experience.

Having said that (Curb Your Enthusiasm reference), gloves have been around for a long time for a reason: they work. Why reinvent the wheel with something else? I have no idea how difficult these mitts are to remove, but you don't want to leave them on the bike because they'll freeze up.

You're using LED bulbs for running lights right? If you did decide to remove the DOT's, and continue to use the LED's (after converting the deadlights to both runners and blinkers) you would need to either:
A) Use a universal flasher relay to correct the flash rate.
B) Swap the rear bulbs for Silvania Silverstars, or similar wattage bulbs (this will correct the flash rate).

If you wanted to just use the deadlights as blinkers and loose the running lights, the above would still apply.

The 06 Bud's used a drop down bracket for the DOT bulbs but I think it only droppped em about 3/4". I might have those brackets laying around somewhere.

Have you tried a nice pair of mittens? My hands get cold very easy due to all of the times I have gotten frost nip (the stage before frost bite). I have to wear mittens now while mountianeering. Nice thick fleece liner covered buy a water/wind proof (gore-tex) shell. Much warmer then the warmest gloves.

...that's why I said to replace the bulbs with DOT bulbs.

I know. I was just saying he could keep the LED's in the front and swap the rear bulbs (not the deadlight bulbs) with higher wattage bulbs. I believe you were talking about swapping the front bulbs.

When I lived in Grand Jct. (for 20-odd years) I always used those handlebar mitts with a good pair of gloves...it was a SUPER way to keep warm. I went through two winters there with only a motorcycle for transportation and ALWAYS used those things...may still have 'em somewhere here in the garage...

Brand name was "Hippo Hands".
