Upgrades for the Pamplona Buddy 50?

Post by Emerson »

Got a Pamplona Buddy 50 a while back (~3000mi) and now I'd like to start upgrading. I've done some searching through Modern Buddy but could not find a good thread of the suggested top upgrades. FYI, I'm in Boston and ride 365 days a year.

By "upgrading" do you mean speed or other improvements?

The first speed upgrade (if it hasn't already been done) is derestricting it to break the 30mph barrier. It's quick, and easy enough for anyone who knows how to use basic tools. Or in my case, how to ask the dealer to do it. :)

A couple upgrades I haven't done (not really interested in the trade-offs) are 1) a replacement exhaust pipe that changes the characteristics of the ignition cycle to produce more power... and more noise; and 2) a kit that replaces the 50cc cylinders with 70cc to produce more power... and lower gas mileage.

Disclaimer: Depending on state laws, any of these might require licensing it as a motorcycle and licensing the operator as a motorcycle operator.

Yeah it really depends on what you want to do! Do a search for the word "voodoo" here. You'll find a lot of different crazy things people have done. Crazy in a good way. Many of them will be for a 125 but might give you some ideas!

My next upgrade for the 50cc Italia will be to move on up to the 150cc Italia.

But I have done the de-restricting process (need an impact wrench) and it makes a world of difference. My 50cc will now cruise at 45 mph with no problem, and depending on the environment, will hit 50 mph. I have had it up to 65 mph going down hill, but remember the brakes and tires weren't designed for that speeds if something untoward happens. I'm thinking about a top box, but I haven't had any need for it, so it's just a maybe. I took off the bicycle side reflectors, which are hideous, so that's a cosmetic upgrade. Lots of nice accessories available for the Buddy's.

it would realy help to know what your goals are
you have to remeber you have the a horizontal minerllie engine so dont just look for parts for the buddy/rough house there are over 70 diffrent bbks for this engine and depedning on your fab skills there are about the same amount of pipes for this engine(you may have to modify the mounting brackets for some of them heck even for the zuma which is very popular to mod you have to modify the brackets on some)

also look at sites like scooter attack in europe for ideas on parts

I'd check out the black cat, rattler, roughhouse board as the same enigine is in the roughhouse and those folks are always tweaking thier scoots. It seems as if the stage 1 kit (pipe, roller weights) doesn't sacrifice too much reliability but folks are always blowing thier engines once they kit them. I suppose its all part of the fun for some folks, trying to get as much speed out of the scoot as possible but it seems you lose a lot of reliability when you go to the 70cc kits. So far I've kept mine stock on the performance end and just customized it cosmetically. You can have a lot of fun with panel switching, grips, crash gaurds, cases, bags, racks, lights, and the like and not have to worry too much about it dieing on you. One thing I will say is that if you upgrade the lighting I would highly suggest upgrading the battery. I switched to an 8Ah battery since the 3Ah battery the 50s come with just couldn't handle the running lights being reconnected even with LED bulbs installed.

if you do the research and pick the proper parts and do the work your self(unless the shop is experianced in scooter tuning and you can see a few of the bikes they have done run properly and they have miles on them dont trust a shop to do the work)

most failures are due to people buying mismatched parts or not knowing what they are doning

one thing to consider is removing the "glob" in the exhasut port scooter therapy had posted about it but they say you dont have to up jet my personal experiance is that you need to up jet with this mod plus you need some sort of pipe to notice the true top end gains

if you want a reliable set up that will last as long as stock get a cast iron 2 ring kit there are several great ones to choose from polin sport kit will whellie like a sob the malosii kit has a great top end and the same with the top performace trophy kit you will need to up jet your carb for any of these set ups going up to a 17.5 mm carb is advisable you can also run a stock pipe with these kits but it will hold you back and you run the chance of over heating with a stock cat pipe

if you dont want as much reliabilty go with a mid race kit or a race kit with these you will need at least a 19mm carb and an expansion pipe and a lot of tuning to make it work

then one other thing that you dont want to forget is that you may now want to upgear just to keep the rpms down to where the crank can survive nicly the h/m engine stock cranks dont like much more the 9000 to 10000 rpm for long periods of time

one thing i have noticed in comon with a lot of failures too is that people like to put extra oil in the fuel this is a no go unless you jet for the extra oil in the fuel your fuel also cools your engine so too much oil will cause you to over heat and seize for some reason a lot of people on this board beilve it is a good thing to do

if you doubt me go and read about it over on zumaforums
there are tons of scoots over there that have been sucessfully moded to rune 60 mph or more yes thats right 60 mph on a "50cc" scoot

modind your scoot all comes down to budget and skill what will happen is you will get on part to its max then you have to figure out how to keep the weak link alive the crank so you will either have to replace the crank or do something to keep the revs down

Put a Rat 110 engine in, it's easy. See my post on how with photos.
