[NSR] relocating to pdx....

My husband and I are relocating to portland, oregon very soon. I will be starting a grad program @ L&C in the summer, and we are trying to move earlier than that (like right now) and my husband is looking for a job.

I'm curious if any locals could shed some light on what the job market is like currently in pdx for software developers (.net specifically)? he's applied for a bunch of positions already, but i'm sure in a down economy, as an out-of-state applicant, it's going to be a challenge.

any tips/advice from portlanders would be greatly appreciated! we can't wait to get out there!

I can't really speak specifically to .NET developers, but I can say that the overall employment situation here is fairly dismal. Still, keep sending the resumes and something might come up. I managed to get a technical job here before I relocated 10 years ago.

As for job hunting, do the normal techie stuff, Dice and Monster. But also keep an eye on Craigslist and Oregonlive.com (the Oregonian Newspaper's crappy website). Many technical jobs are outside of Portland in Beaverton, Tigard, Hillsboro, etc. Stay open to taking one of those as it's not far to any of those cities.

Has he done any work with VoIP or Linux? I'm actually looking for some engineering, support, and development positions at my company.

The IT market here is one of the better markets to be in right now. But none of our job market is that great. Apparently we're one of the worst unemployment rates in the country

don't let that discourage you though, P-Town is awesome, and SUPER scooter friendly! If you'll be at L&C I ride past their campus every day on my way to work, maybe we'll spot eachother

Thanks- we check those sites daily and he's been applying for a couple every night, so maybe something will happen soon. Unfortunately, in my field, the Portland job market seems to be dead, so it's all on him.

Actually, i think pdx is going to be a much better fit for us. we are both born and raised here, but don't really fit in. plus, can't wait to get out and explore that whole side of the country. we've been dreaming about this move for years and are really excited about it.

definitely will let you guys know when we get out there. we are interested in getting involved in the local scooter community.

Please do! We have a group that does monthly(ish) rides in the spring/summer/fall and occasionally in the winter too. We've had as many as 30 scoots out on rides at peak, and always have a TON of fun!
