Can I still use my gear oil?

Post by LuvMyScoot »

Ok, sometime just before the first snow storm of the winter I bought a new bottle of gear oil (you know, because I wanted to be ready for the spring that would be coming 4 months or so down the line). Anywho, I don't know how I managed it but I left the bottle of oil, still in the bag, sitting on the side of my garage all winter. It wasn't until I went to actually change the gear oil on my girl the other day and was like, where the hell did I put that oil? There it was, just where I left it last December. Do you think it's still ok to use, or should I just buy another bottle?

if it is a brand new bottle and the seal is still on never been opened your good to go

just bring it in and let it warm up good so it will come out of the bottle

I leave my gear oil in the scooter. It's fine over the winter so if it's in the bottle it's OK too.

You can also ease the process by setting the container of lube in a pot or pan of hot (not boiling) water. Just make sure to remove the container's seal and leave the cap open a bit so as to prevent a messy burst. I do this when changing the lube on the Blur and it changes the honey-like viscosity to something more like maple syrup. A lot easier to load into a syringe and measure.

Thanks, everyone! The bottle was sealed so I'm good to go. I haven't actually changed the gear oil yet; winter took a break for a few days but it's back...

I've never had issues with gear oil that I've opened before over the winter time. It has a screw on air tight cap though, maybe that makes a difference? I just know that gear oil lasts a long time, loooong time, and with the buddy only using 90ml/90cc's it can last 10 oil changes.

Yeah, I'm counting on that bottle lasting me quite a while.

I know that garages get just as cold as the great outdoors but wouldn't hesitate if I'd left it in the garage. For some reason it was bothering me that I'd left it outside to be rained on, snowed on, iced on, you name it. For some stupid reason I thought that would make a difference (like the plastic bottle and bag really cared if it got wet!).
