Treat it like it kicked your dog, stole your milk money and teased you about your hair in grade school. Ride it hard and vary the RPMs.Milktown wrote:in a week il be getting my 161cc kit. how much breaking in will i have to do? should i just treat it like a new scooter?

yep, you're breaking in a new engine all over again. What's different this time is it will run hotter with few additional means to cool itself. (read: the 150 comes with an oil cooler but this kit)Milktown wrote:in a week il be getting my 161cc kit. how much breaking in will i have to do? should i just treat it like a new scooter?
so yeah, break it in like you did the first time. If that was all out, so be it. I was told to never run one speed for too long (feather) and avoid WOT the first 600miles when I went back to have the oil changed and then make sure it was all adjusted.
I have 8300 miles on my kit so far so good. I need to get my oil changed closer to every 1k miles because 95% of my riding in WOT.
Did you get the 150 head, too? I'm told that's real difference in torque and really torque is all I gained but yeah, it's SWEET to zoom up a steep incline with no real problems!
I only had my buddy for 3500 miles before kitting her so I don't really recall what the 125 feels like but MAN do I love my kitted buddy! ENJOY!

All depends on who you ask. The only thing that people seem to agree on is to vary the throttle. I like the method outlined here:Milktown wrote:and what really is the "right" way to break in an engine?

But thats just me.

Considering it's tuned properly, this^^^Lostmycage wrote:Treat it like it kicked your dog, stole your milk money and teased you about your hair in grade school. I don't know if I did it right but I haven't had problems so it work good. I don't have the luxury of taking it too easy. Most of roads are Highways (not freeways) where the speed limit is 50mph so traffic moves at 59mph. On a scoot that's indicated at 64mph (ish) so pretty much full throttle.
I think it's key - the whole life of the scooter - to let it properly warm each time it's turned on. Don't take off until that idle settles. I've never timed it I just wait until the I hear it and it seems like that's longer than 2 mins and I live in Southern California!!! So I imagine if it's at all cold where you are then it may take longer.
Now my MPG tanked (50-60mpg) when I first put in the kit and now I'm getting btwn 65-70mph down from 90mpg pre-kit. That's still pretty good and I don't think 150cc Buddy's get TOO much better.
The less I run WOT the better the mpg. So yeah, ride it hard, check the oil often and don't stay in any single throttle position for more than maybe 10mins. And actually change your throttle position, slow it down a few mph don't just slight turn your wrist without actually changing the speed.
I really didn't worry too much about it but I did try to change every song so I could be sure I wasn't just WOT for an hour without thinking.
Good luck. it's way fun!

Change the throttle position more often than every 10 minutes.

I'll second that. It stole your lunch money in the 3rd grade, teach it a lessonScooterTrash wrote:Considering it's tuned properly, this^^^Lostmycage wrote:Treat it like it kicked your dog, stole your milk money and teased you about your hair in grade school. right. if not in the city where there are lights regulating you. don't let it go on for more than 10mins in a position and my marker as noted was with every song change (I have a stereo) I change my position just to help me remember to. I go on long rides on open roads so I can be scooting until the gas runs out at WOT. I think after break in it's wise to fluctuate the throttle. It can't be good to running anything all out for hours, you know?Lostmycage wrote:Change the throttle position more often than every 10 minutes.

Do your break-in inside of city limits. You'll want to vary the throttle WAY more than every 2-4 minutes. More like every 10 seconds; it doesn't have to be a drastic change, just a change. Think of how often the RPMs change in a motorcyle while it's going through it's gear range and try to mimic that.
Once it's broken in, you can ride for however long you like at whatever speed. It's air cooled, just keep it moving.
If you find that you do all of your riding at WOT (not lots of bursts at WOT, or near WOT, but throttle collar full tilt back the entire ride) then you might be trying to get more out of the scooter than it's capable of. Or something's way off in the drive train.

this is the text from my mechanic within the invoice:
SCOOTER IS VERY SNAPPY WITH
KIT, CARB IS SETUP WITH THE 105 MAIN JET,
AND NEEDLE AT THE STOCK SETTING
BREAKIN BREAK CYLINDER IN CAREFULLY, NO
CONTINUOUS FULL THROTTLE OPERATION FOR
600 MILES/1000 KMS, CHANGE ENGINE
OIL/FILTER IN 300 MILES
my guy will error on the side of safe every time but the salient bits are no continously WOT for the first 600miles and get that first oil change at 300 miles. They jetted me down to a 100 at some point, too. Turns out I have just over 10K miles on the kit! good quality stuff. I have the 150 stock head not the NCY one.
