scooter noobie

Post by smokin_cannon »

just wanted to formally introduce myself to the fray.
my name is chris and i live in central ohio with my wife- stully.
i recently looked into getting a scooter for my wife so she could have some fun riding in to work, save some gas money, and feel good about burning up a few less fossils. i looked at a zillion scooters online and then went to a couple local shops. when the owner of supersonic scooters here in columbus told me about the buddy, i was skeptical of the cost (vs all the cheap bikes available over the internet). i found this site and became very interested. you all sound like a pretty satisfied group of scooter owners.
the more i researched and read about the genuine scooter co., the more determined i was.

unbeknownst to stully, her orange buddy should be here any day. i ordered it a week ago while she was traveling and have had a heck of a time not telling her. i'm sure she'll be surprised and i can't wait to ride it myself.

CONGRATS!!!

I hope both of you enjoy the ride!

Please read my Observations from a new rider and many other threads about things new riders learn/observe. Please let us know if you need help finding decent gear at a decent price (various website' we frequent.)

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS PHRASE!!!

ATGATT=All The Gear ALL The TIME!!! A spill at maybe 15 mph left me with some road rash and my should is still sore 13 days later (NOT THAT bad, but it's still tight and occasionally when picking up items it hurts)

My accident happened after 11 days of riding doing a simple left hand turn from a stoplight. After taking the Motorcycle Safety Foundations Basic Rider Course I know what mistakes I did and WILL not repeat them!

If you want to get some stylish shoes for her, unfortunately a San Francisco scooterist was run off the road by a person with a SERIOUS mental displacement issue. He ran over her foot with the car. No damage to her at all and her shoes are fine! She got the Audrey's from Fluevog. http://www.fluevog.com/

I posted it far too often but there's a link to the MSF's Scooter specific manual. It's got some great, fun and easy things to practice in a parking lot for real world riding situations.

Hell I'd get them for my wife but she doesn't like the big stitch look!

No, I actually recommend shoes that cover the ankles. Seriously best add for a womens dress shoe I've heard in a while. "An SUV ran over my foot. No damage to me and the shoes still look great!"

If you haven't, use the search tool for Locks or securing buddy...I forgot the title of that thread. It was an AWESOME discussion of different securing devices for a scooter.

OH congrats on the blur!!!

AGATT for real. I got run into the median curb by a cager in an SUV and while my Budd slid down the street I did horizontal pirouettes down the median at 35 mph! Helmet, FirstGear Venom Mesh-Tex jacket, and my last pair of US Army issue boots kept me from getting more than just beat up a bit. No broken bones, no rash, no serious bruising.

People without helmets are considered organ donors.

ECS
Yes, that is my scooter.
Yes, I wear a helmet and a FIRSTGEAR armored jacket.
No, I'm not embarrassed to be seen riding it.
Yes, that is an NRA sticker on the fender.

Smokin,

I bought my wife an '07 Cream Buddy for her birthday a couple of months ago. She loved it and yes it was hard keeping the secret. We ended up getting me my very own because 1) I kept borrowing hers and 2) we can scoot together!

It is a great scooter. You made a wise choice. There are scooters that are cheaper, but the Buddy is well made, has a good warranty...plus, you get all of us!

Welcome to the club. Ride safe, and ditto what has been said about MSF and good gear.

i definitely will. this wait is killing me.
ordered it last Tues, so it's likely to arrive today or tomorrow.

she doesn't have her motorcycle endorsement, so i'll give it to her and she can go get it as well as pick out a helmet the next day (hopefully tomorrow, but i'm past expecting it).

...no i'm not

Well I got the scooter!

Holy Cow, I think this is the best gift ever, my handsome husband smokin cannon totally pulled one over on me. I thought we were going out to dinner and as we passed by the scooter shop I asked if he had done any more research on the mini van of scooters, when he pulled in, I thought we were just going to look around and then the sales rep asked if I wanted to ride my Buddy.. what the French? Toast!..I did not get it at first, it is still kind of sinking in, I have a scooter. As smokin cannon mentioned now he needs to teach me to ride, but I can't wait. I am a scooter girl whoop whoop! and who has a husband this cool, seriously. :D
