Sad battery

Post by Ethan Allison »

So as of the past couple days I haven't been able to use the electric starter, and I'm guessing I've drained my battery too far to recharge it onboard. I've got a jumper pack but it doesn't seem to be designed for charging batteries.

Think I should try hooking it up for an hour or two, or would I just end up setting something on fire?

You could always kick start your scooter and just go for a good long ride. That would do the trick.

On most things it would, but the charging sysytems on the Genuines aren't all that. If the battery is discharged, charge it over night on a trickle charger, and THEN put it in the bike and see how it does. Or if you have a good relationship with the local shop have them charge it overnight and check the battery for you...
That way you will know if the battery is crap or just discharged.

before you charge or jump, be sure to remove cables and check and clean off any corrosion or chalking. This corrosion will not let a jumper or charger give ample voltage and amperage to electric start you scoot. You will think you have enough but at times wont. If all works dont forget to put on some battery terminal grease or spray when reattaching cables.

A trickle charger like a Battery Tender Jr. (around $35) is probably a much better way to charge than the jumper, which is really just designed to get you started.

I know a trickle charger is better... I'm just broke! I'll check a few shops around here and see if they do loaners / in-store charging.
