Oil change b4 Winter or next Spring?

Post by ryder1 »

The dealer said my next oil change s/be at 2,000 miles (uses synthetic). Its at 2060 right now.

I'm not sure how much longer weather will permit for riding in MN depending on what type of fall we have.

Am I better to have the oil changed now and let it sit through winter OR continue to ride till 2500 or more and have the oil changed in next Spring.

Do I need to have the oil changed again in the Spring even if I have it changed now?

This is a good question. I have always read that it is better to change the engine oil just before storage because that removes a lot of bad stuff such as moisture and contaminants. It is better to let the engine sit with clean, uncontaminated oil.

In reality, I am not sure how closely I will follow the recommendation to change the oil JUST before storage. Within the next month I am due for my first oil change on my Buddy. My wife and I only ride our Buddy on the weekend and we don’t put a lot of miles on it so by the time November/December rolls around and we are ready to store it for the winter we will have only put about 200 miles on the newly changed oil. I will probably store it with that relatively new oil rather than changing the oil just before storage.

In your situation, I would probably change the oil before winter because you have a lot of miles on that oil.

This is what is suggested for motorcycles, not sure bout scoots. ( I am a noob)

Also I dont winterize/store my bike I ride all year long.

If you plan to put the bike up for the winter.

Before you store it.
Change oil.
Ride bike for 10 minutes.
Add stabiil to gas, store for winter.

Before you take the bike out in the spring.
Change the oil.
Charge Battery if needed.
Ride, enjoy.

Yes, Oil breaks down even if you dont run the engine.
