i think my scooter is losing power

Post by slusher5 »

recently my scooter seems to have lost its top end, it used to have a distinct sound around 40 bmph and the scooter would accel faster.. now it sounds like I'm just maxing out around 40bmph(won't know for sure until i test with gps cuz my speedo is not working)..

I think my mechanic said the prima exhaust kicks in at higher speeds, so could it be something with that?
could cold weather be causing it?(normally like 90-100, been like 70-80 lately)
could it be because my scooter has 7k miles on it?
something with spark plugs?

any ideas? thanks

I don't have an answer to your inquiry, however, I am also experienceing a loss of topend in my 170i. I have only had it for 5 weeks now (700miles) but today when I went to the store the speedo toped out at 65mph indicated which according to my gps = 57mph. Last week on the same road the speedo hit 72mph which = 63mph real. So it seems I have lost 5mph topend. I checked the oil and it was ok, so I'm with you a bit confused.

It's a 170, so he's got a lot more top end than us 125 owners.

Your carb might need cleaned, try running some carb cleaner through your next tank and see if it helps.

That 72mph was what the speedo said, the gps indicated 63mph. No hill and only about 10mph wind.

Things that could easily cause that off the top of my head are:
Dirty/worn spark plug.
Corroded spark plug boot.
Grounding of coil is loose.
Dirty jets/carb.
Loose throttle cable.

I'd check things in that order, your spark plug being the easiest and cheapest thing to look at. Just get a new one for a few bucks, especially if it hasn't been changed in a while, I like to put a new one at least every 2k miles for good measure since it's cheap.
