Buddy 50 Battery is Dead. Do I need to replace it?

Kick starting is fine. Starts and runs.

Any reason to change the battery??

Otherwise-

What's a good INEXPENSIVE replacement battery.

the starters on these things aren't super-hardy. I've been having charging problems (probably thanks to some creative electrical work I did) and so I've had to kick start every time, and after hearing stories about Vespa engine cases cracking from repeated kickstarting (Vespas don't even have 'em anymore I don't think), it makes me nervous to do it a lot.

Also, if you have a dead battery, you have no lights if your engine dies in the middle of nowhere at night, and I've noticed my lights dim at low revs or when my brake light or turn signals are on, though that might just be me.

Whatever you do, don't remove the battery and run without it, that can do some damage. a dead battery is better than no battery.

The kickstarting cracking the transmission case thing is very specific to the modern Vespas that had them. I can kick the Buddy or Stella, no problem. That damn Vespa LX is very difficult to kickstart. Takes numerous attempts and I think a lot of people wind up repeatedly kicking the crap out of the dang thing trying to get it to work.

So—wouldn't worry about that at all with another scoot!

There are several other brands beside Yuasa that make good replacements. I have had good luck with Powersport batteries. The local battery shop carries them at very competitive prices.

By the way. I live in Denver, but it's mostly Garaged. Have a Battery Tender but Usually don't use it.

Should I stay with Maintenance Free or AGM or GEL?

Advanced Auto Parts has an Autocraft fro $26.04 in stock

Looks like Amazon has some AGM/GEL's for $17.88 + 8.99 shipping.

Any thoughts?

I have three scooters and this is the one that I beat up and don't worry about too much when parking in front of bars Downtown LOL!

aren't these small batteries good to go with simply a charge up? such as with Battery Tender Jr or having it done at a shop?

Scooter batteries are not zombies. Once they're dead, they're dead. If you want to make sure it's dead, drag it to a Batteries Plus or other battery shop and let them test it for you. They have a gizmo that can really tell you if it's dead (as opposed to just badly discharged).

I know this is crazy talk, but do you have a local scooter or motorcycle shop you could stop by? I know they can test batteries and even sell "em to ya.

I closed my shop in 2004, did I run the last honest motorcycle shop on the planet?
