Day tripping.
Just finished my first 'big' ride.
Went from San Diego to Julian (about 130 miles round trip) picked up some delicious pies and cider, had a leisurely lunch and then headed back home.
Didn't see any scooterists but plenty of friendly MC riders gave me the 2 finger wave. The 40 degree weather made me realize I need to buy a pair of proper winter riding gloves (I know that isn't really all that cold but by SoCal standards it is chilly) and maybe even upgrade to a F/F lid.
What are some of the day trips you have done?

from san diego there is only 3 directions you can go
so in addition to Julian, I've gone over the mountain and down to Borrego Springs. Went to the Salton Sea in a day but that was too long so decided if going further than Borrego and overnight is needed.
Out to Warner Springs to watch the gliders. or to RDs log cabin.
Scooted to Palm Springs for an overnight.
Scooted around Pendleton to LA for an overnight
Scooted with a rally to Mexico, near Ensenada.
Out east to Jamul.
Hauled it to LA and did a day trip to Santa Barbara from there.
but the most regular is Borrego. it's a very nice day trip but can only be done for just a short time because it gets too dang hot!
Julian gets so cold. have scooted the Banner Grade when there was snow - not on purpose, us city folks didn't even think about snow.

Hi,
Day-tripping is one of my favorite things about the scoot/moto! I live in Minneapolis and for the past few summers, I have been pushing the limits of my Buddy 125 trying to find the practical max-range. I have taken day trips from my home in SW Minny to Stillwater, Eau Claire, Hudson and so forth. I have not gotten all the way up to Duluth - plotting a back roads route there is difficult, and the freeways are no-bueno.
It's another reason I upgraded to a Motorcycle ... longer legs!

Lokky and I have done a day trip from here to Charlottesville, to an orchard- to and fro it's 150 miles, but we also went into town proper and visited a friend, so it was probably more like 160 or even 170.
It wasn't a day trip, it was for the weekend, but we also rode two-up to Baltimore from here. Appx 300 miles, maybe 6 or 7 hours including stops. Anybody ever managed to fall asleep riding cupcake? I did.

Nice ride
@ Luna, my wife slept about 60 miles once on the back of my 750 Yamaha coming home from the motorcycle races once... She was fine, and quite stable. But We ride a good bit, she was tired that day so instead of taking her own bike. She rode with me...Glad she did

Speed is only a matter of money...How fast do you want to go?

Bwah! I really want to ride to Julian. Making a day ride out of something like that is one of the few times I wish I had a 250. Even as an overnighter, it's a hell of a lot of riding.
I love day tripping. My favorite day trips used to be out to the canyons near the coast: Mulholland Highway, Malibu, then up the Pacific Coast Highway. The traffic out there's gotten too heavy; far too many sportbike squids and drivers crossing the double yellows.
Now I much prefer the Angeles National Forest and CA-2 (Angeles Crest Hwy). Just as scenic, great roads (though not quite as twisty)—many newly paved—and it's much closer to central LA. There are enough routes that I can do a short route halfway up the mountain or the Mt. Wilson Observatory or to Santa Clarita and back home in hours. Or I can do a longer run and make a whole day—or two days sometimes—out of it.
The down side? Snow and ice! When I moved to LA, I'd no idea that would be a problem just 40-50 miles north of the city.

We do many day rides with our scooter group, but there's something really great about just heading up into the forest by myself. As I've been getting back into photography, I sometimes use these trips to test out different cameras. I like being able to stop when I want and take as long as I like shooting pics. (Bonus: Still takes less time than riding in a group! And when I drop a camera at an overlook and ride off, I can go back and get it.)
Now I know I need to ride out this weekend!

the time we thought we could get to the Salton Sea and back in a day was the worse case of "uh, I didn't know..." yet.
60degrees at the Ocean, 35 degrees up in Julian with snow and 80 degrees in the desert. Thought it would take 5hrs but was closer to 10hrs total and so back through Julian in the snow and ice in the dark. I have NEVER been so cold on my scooter. It took me days to warm back up

First world problems, right?

You and Justin owe me and Wayne a visit. Do it soon. I'm moving to Atlanta in September!

Re: Day tripping.
Great job! You've probably been bitten and will soon be looking for other excuses to get out of town, for no particular reason at all.
Chesapeake Bay Loop, 2 day trip with "texepictetus".
Shenandoah National Park with my beautiful wife.
My wife and I also went out around the canyons of Mulholland Dr and Malibu with a few other MB members (ericalm, skootzkabootz, jijifer, n2tatoos) when we were in LA on rental scooters. And I went with a friend to Philly and back in 1 day (cold and rainy) just for a cheesesteak.
*edit*: I also regularly get out of the city for the day, just tooling around rural parts of Northern VA and Southern MD, usually at least 100 miles each day.
Point is, the possibilities are endless. Think of something wild and crazy that you want to do, especially when non-riders tell you it is not possible or you are nuts. Go out and see the world, it's incredible!
Here's a guy who lived off his Rattler 110 for a few months, going from DC to Alaska and meandering his way back across the lower 48.
Rode to all 86 Metro stations in DC, Maryland and Virginia in the same day.westniner wrote:What are some of the day trips you have done?

Over the summer my bf and I frequently take trips around a local lake, ends up being a total of 250-ish miles. I only got to do it once on the scoot so far (since I didn't receive it until OCTOBER!) and it was a nice ride. Other times I was on the back of the Harley, still nice, but definitely nicer on the scoot
This coming summer will bring many more adventures for the two of us, I finally have a set-not-so-random work schedule, with weekends off. Hopefully we'll end up doing an overnight camping trip up to a couple other lakes in the Adirondacks! AND I am going to try to start up a scooter and mc group in my area, hoping for a decent turn out as I have already made a few new friends on my scooter travels!
