Battery fail

Post by PeteH »

Well, I did it to myself.

For the year I've had my 2009 Italia 150 (purchased with 0mi in Jan 2011), I've had no battery problems. But this _is_ a three-year-old battery, as I recently found out.

We had warm-enough weather to ride from time to time over the past month or so, but between rainstorms and cargo-carrying needs that kept me in the minivan, my scoot has sat for a month or more. I added a Gorilla alarm system this past summer, and didn't think about the (very small but noticeable) current drain, and didn't put the scoot on the Battery Tender.

Saturday was a toys-for-tots ride sponsored by a local scoot club, so Friday night I went out to start the scoot, just to check. Nothin. Flat as a pancake. I plugged in the Tender, but by morning it hadn't charged. It only took in enough juice to buzz the starter. Not good. Pulled the battery, took it and the Tender indoors just to see if temperature helped, but by Sunday morning, it was still in the red, not taking a charge.

I ran it over to Batteries Plus and indeed it tested bad. Replaced it with a new AGM battery for about $60 after tax and 10% online coupon.

Moral of the story - don't run it all the way down. Oh, and owning a Battery Tender doesn't do you a danged bit of good unless you actually plug it in and use it. :D :?

Oh, and in case you haven't got one yet, the Battery Tender Jr. is on sale at Jafrum today (at least) for $19.95:

I was lucky enough to get one when I first started scooting, thinking, "I may need this." Great purchase.

Yep. Last winter I was OK - I didn't have a load on the battery pulling it down to zilch, but this year I sorta forgot about my alarm system, which draws a minor yet non-zero amount of current and crushed it flat.

Even then, with most car batteries, some charger time usually brings them back, but mine wouldn't take a charge and tested at the store with something ridiculous like 6 cranking amps.

And scooting to work virtually all spring, summer, and fall, I never even thought about putting it on the Tender. It don't work if you don't use it, Petey, you knucklehead!

Three years realy isn't a bad life for a battery. If I get over that I consider it bonus time!
