Tucson Scooter Hit Last Night

Post by Howardr »

One of the Sky Island Riders was rear ended last night.

Image

This used to be a People 250. He was at a stop light. The car behind him stopped, but it was rear ended by another car, sending it into the scooter. joe is okay, but is a bit sore. His helmet, one glove and his jacket are all damaged. Thanks be to gear.

Oh, the second car, wound up leaving the scene, too. Bastard!

Be careful out there folks. I don't even know how you can avoid one like this.

Jesus. Glad to hear the guy's more-or-less OK...thanks be to gear indeed.

if you hadn't mentioned what kind of bike that used to be (appropriate wording there) I never would have guessed.

I hope someone at least got a make-and-model of the bastard who drove off.

Glad to hear the rider is going to be okay...And yeah, hopefully the guy that caused it gets caught...

Sorry to hear about this! For those experienced and skilled riders, do chime in as to what possible preventative measures might be taken.

As a bicyclist, when I'm stopped at a stop light and I see a car pulling behind me, I make it a point to see that they are slowing down and sometimes I pull up just a bit. But I don't always do this. But in any case, this may not actually help when a car behind the car slams into the car in the front.

I would have, but I own one. And another one, that looks a lot like the one pictured (or did, before we disassembled it for all the usable parts). Hope soreness and gear is the extent of the damage. As for that P250, it is definitely toast, and I hope he had comprehensive coverage on it.

Best wishes to the downed rider. Hope he is back to 100% quickly. Also hope they catch the driver who left the scene and deal with them appropriately!

Always split to the front of a line of stopped cars so you're protected by the cars behind you. And always have an escape path planned before you stop. First sound of squealing tires, get out of there as best you can. (as per the MSF course and Proficient Motorcycling...)

Um, this isn't actually legal in most states!

Escape path is right. Keep a hand on the throttle and an eye on your mirror. I managed to swerve aside in traffic once, so the car behind me hit the one that had been in front of me instead of hitting my scooter. Whew.

More like... every state except for Cali :)

But yeah... that's pretty scary. Grim reminder of all the crazy stuff that can go wrong on the road.

I also hope that the douchenozzle who hit and ran gets what's coming to him. Or twofold. Cowards like that deserve it.

Glad the rider is okay, relatively!

True. But (where legal) it is a good and recommended safety habit. Good reason it should be legal everywhere IMO.

Generally, we try to avoid recommending people violate traffic laws. :P

I can scarcely imagine the chaos, death, destruction, road rage, Hell freezing over, dogs and cats living together, anarchy, etc. the day lane splitting goes into effect anywhere else. It's come up in state legislatures, referendums and in front of city councils around the country and it gets defeated every time. Even many riders outside CA oppose it and think the practice in CA is pure nuttiness.

Those aren't reasons to be against it, but it's a steep uphill battle and would necessitate a huge driver and rider education program. If the will and money were there, they could spend it now on a "Hey, jackass! Watch out for motorcycles and scooters!" campaign.

The world hates us. We laugh in its face.

Yeah, I gotta agree. In some places, like Phoenix, where car is king, it would be open season on lane splitters. The only people who would like it would be (automotive) body shops and 1-800 lawyers.

I did it exactly once, one time, and a guy in an 18-wheeler cab tried to use his vehicle to murder me, so I skipped it after that.

Definitely best to obey local custom (and the law...) We definitely have it good here in CA. It would suck to be trapped behind cars. Especially here in LA. Yuck! It's a shame other states aren't hip to the safety benefits of appropriate lane splitting. I feel for ya.

Now, now. Take a few deep breaths until your heart rate stabilizes, then sit down with a cold brew and think of something pleasant (like riding scooters in Tuscany). It is like me getting worked up about states that basically encourage folks to ride without helmets. No use getting our panties in a knot  .

What? States do that??? :wha:

I agree about lanesplitting somewhat... I would imagine somewhere with many more scooterists, where cagers are used to it, it's mostly fine... but GETTING the area used to it would be tricky and rough.

It'd be a nightmare up and down the entire east coast, I can tell you that. Richmond, on the whole, are dumb drivers. Not a-hole drivers. DUMB drivers. Don't get me started about anywhere in New England, urban Florida/old people central, or D.C. *shudder*

Me, riding in other states: "Why are we just sitting here? Oh. Yeah."

While there are safety benefits, it's the convenience and speed I miss. I also have to admit that, from riding elsewhere, having that ability here makes me a less patient rider.

I certainly don't think so!
