[NBR] New Scoot!

Post by SoCalScooter »

Just thought I'd share this with ya'll...

So I've been going back and forth between getting a new HD200 vs. a new Blur vs. a new Kymco People S 250... Until recently, I was leaning towardthe HD200, but I saw a used SYM Citycom 300i on craigslist for cheap!

Intrigued, I looked up info and found it to be comparable to the HD200 in speed (but with higher top end), and with better fuel economy than the People s 250. I sent an email to the seller, but unfortunately, the scoot had sold after being listed for 2 days :(

I expanded my search from just San Diego to include Orange County, LA, Palm Springs, etc... and I came across a new 2009 Citycom for a few hundred less than the best price I'd found on a 2012 HD200. This morning I drove up to Orange County to take a look at it... Big, beautiful and FAST! I pulled the trigger and will be adding this baby to my stable this coming Saturday (first chance both parties available for delivery)!

While it's not a "true" 300 (at a meager 262cc), it kicks! Should be all that I was looking for and more in a commuter - easy to keep up at the 60 mph speed limit and the huge wind shield should help keep me warmer too (not that it's a huge issue here in San Diego):)

I'm super happy and I can't wait for the chance to break it in!

Congratulations on the Citycom. I was really disappointed when I didn't like it, because I loved my HD200, and wanted, well I wanted an HD300 (which the Citycom isn't).

On a side note, I saw the new HD200 Evo at my local dealer this weekend - one in BRIGHT yellow, the other in flat or satin (aka BlackJack) black. Nice.

Thanks Syd, if I had my druthers, I'd also be riding an HD 300.. But given the price, and potential resale value for the bikes I was looking at, I think I got the most value for my dollar... Unpowered, the bike is unwieldy, but it feels light and nimble at 10+ mph

While I'm not as versed on the SYM bikes, this one does look really sharp in black if you ask me! Congrats... ride vids will be expected soon :P

Colors? What colors...

Post by SoCalScooter »

Thanks again! Neo, the dealer said its dark blue, but you can only tell in direct sunlight that it's not black.... I am mostly colorblind so I just agree with whatever someone else says on the subject! (yeah, it sucks buying a bright purple tie and not knowing till you wear it to work!)

JH, thanks for the reference.. I'm familiar with the thread and I'm glad kiwi scoot went to all the effort to document his maintenance... Gives me confidence that I can tackle most of the work at home! Also, since he's rockin nearly 50,000 Kms on his '08, I think it'll hold up for a good long time.

Sorry to say it, but a friend had one of these, and ran into nothing but problems with the electrical system. He had warranty problems w/ Sym (under the old US distribution regime), and I'm not sure that it's yet settled.
when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

Well forewarned is forearmed (I think that's how it goes)... Thanks for the word of caution. Did your friend do any electrical mods that would have contributed to these issues? I have read up pretty extensively on the scoot and haven't heard this before. I know people have swapped out for a bigger/better battery and upgraded the lights from 35w to 55 without issue...

In any event, I have no intention of "tweaking" the electrical system. Plus, I have two dealers within ~ 15 miles, and Scooterwest/Vespa Motorsport is about 25 miles (while no longer a dealer, the guys there do work on SYM's frequently). I'm sure I can get any bugs worked out under the warranty.

I found this bit funny... my bf is colorblind, and in his old apartment, before I moved in, he had a nice navy blue shower curtain, and some pretty purple mats and towels... he had no clue! He leaves the color choices up to me for the most part now... though we do have a grey area rug, and mossy green curtains in the family room of our new place... he thought they were all grey. Oops!

meh problems and lemons are in every batch of bikes and even cars. 100's of people with posts online who will NEVER buy a Honda Accord or Toyota Corolla ever again, in fact. too many problems, but of course they are the unlucky exceptions to the "bullet proof" rule that mostly is the truth

i say ride and enjoy. this stuff is day tto day. and if everything is fine well, everything is fine. just enjoy the ride i say :)
