Jet plugged..Stumble Update and info..question?

Post by MarkPenn1 »

Please see my earlier post on Buddy 50 stumble last week..sorry I couldn't edit it? Anyway started my scooter this weekend...it ran o.k. on start up ...auto choke o.k..then started to idle o.k. ..I got aboard gave it some throttle and died!! Try to start again and again no luck... removed plug and wet...over fueled.... all total have had the carb off four times!!!.... and EVERYTHING clean..
Question/observaition...I read somewhere???? that on some small scooters/carbs the main jet is plugged off.?? Reason why I bring this up...the very first time I cleaned the carb after scooter sat for some time..I removed the main jet and jet body. It was pretty plugged up and took a special very small drill bit to clean out... not the jet orfice itself; but the jet body... at the time I thought that was pretty unusal because the rest of the carb wasn't that dirty or varnished up.
Anybody have thoughts on this??? Thanks!!

You ran some kind of a drill through some part of your carb?

There are small reamer tools to clean jets. Depending on the jet size, a very small drill bit would do the job without widening the jet opening. I've also heard some folks using old guitar strings.

No, I don't think anybody drilled a hole in their carb body or anything :)

Man, ain't it confusing?

Caveat: I'm not a mechanic, and am mostly used to 4T engines.

If it starts, warms up, then drops down to a normal idle, the idle jet's gotta be OK. The main jet was all clean the last time you were in there, did you say?

Anyway, the fuel side sorta sounds OK, based on your examination of the plug. I'm assuming that the stall was with a good warm engine. I can only come up with more questions.
  • * You had a wet spark plug, but when you were in the carb last time, did you remove and clean the float needle valve? I think there's a possibility that if it's gummed, there may be enough fuel to idle, but not to throttle up. I had this problem once on a 4-cyl.
    * How old is the spark plug? Have you swapped it during this exercise?
    * How does the air cleaner element look? (are you getting good air?)

    * Any other good 2T questions we should be asking?

yes.swapped plugs etc... always looks over fueled... last night tried every scenerio again... then AGAIN removed carb and again carefully removed every item..air/mix needle...slow jet ....main jet and body and collar...mainf float jet needle....EVERYTHING...ALL passages clear....with light and air...looking for anything that could be causing problem... found nothing..zilch.... :( ...I have bowed to failure and guess I have to get a new carb..
Thanks for ALL your input..now to find a place that has reasonable priced carbs..?? Note: I will try and keep you folks updated on outcome. May help others down the road...

Mark, I just went back to your original thread. 2008 model with 75mi on the odo. Silly question, maybe, but how old is the gas and/or oil?

thanks and good thought..however I put all new fuel... which brings up a good point and will throw this out on the discussion board. My manual says to use 30 weight oil in oil injector tank ..so i put in 30 wt...engine oil... what do you guys use? Maybe I'm using the wrong oil fowling plug?
