Plugged my first tire

Post by Howardr »

I know it's not a huge achievement, but i am, nevertheless, pretty proud of myself. I successfully placed a plug in my scooter's tire.

On the way home from work last night,I was about 100 yards from my house, when I heard what sounded like a piece of wire get caught up under the scoot. The stopped about 25 yards from the house. I parked and looked around but couldn't find anything.

When i went out to ride this morning, my rear tire was flat. Inspection revealed the end of a piece of wire or nail sticking out of the center of the tire.

A quick call to my local shop assured me that they have a tire in stock, but they had no idea when they could come by and pick the bike up. I decided that I would have to do something drastic. I snagged the Tire Plug kit out of my pet carrier then sat down and watched a couple of You Tube videos on Tire Plugging.

i went out to the bike and 15 minutes later the plug was done. I then aired it up with my trusty bicycle pump and rode it to Scoot Over where the scoot should have another tire on tomorrow.

The worst part: That tire was almost brand new. It might have had 500 miles on it. Oh Well.

It takes some work!

I got to "practice" on one of my car's tires a few years ago. When I took it in to the dealer, they said the plug was good and I didn't need a new tire! Lasted over 4 years, no problems.

Nice job! Based on my own scooter repair experiences, the smallest things can often feel like the biggest victories! You have every reason to be pleased. Buy yourself a beer! :)

You should of just left the tire on and use it till it wears out. Those rope plugs if done right will last the life of the tire. I have done many car and motorcycle tires with them and had always worn out the tire. If they can withstand being used on a sports bike they have no problems with a scooter. I had one sports bike tire had 3 rope plugs and I used that tire down to the wear bar.
