That's actually fairly common up here.
It also results in a lot of fatalities among young men.
When I was a senior in high school one of the juniors died this way. He was going about 130 on the Thruway and was cut off by someone in a compact car, he swerved to avoid them but lost control of his bike and went airborne into a tree. Not to be gross, but this was included in the article, they found his head, still in the helmet, almost 100 yards away from his torso and motorcycle, his arms and legs were completely crushed, and I don't think they ever found one of his feet... that's how fast he was going.
I hate having to take the Thruway anywhere though, people really are such effing idiots on that road it's ridiculous. It's two lanes, so one is for traffic and one for passing. Well, it's horribly common that both lanes are taken up by people just barely doing the speed limit, OR big tractor trailers, charter buses, etc travel in the left lane just for funsies. Technically, on the Thruway it's illegal for large vehicles to ride in the left hand lane, but they never get pulled over for it.
When the bf and I make trips down to my sister's house in Ravena, or down to his friend's place in Newburgh, or even to CT, we end up doing 140mph in the GTi (or about 100 in my car or the jetta) frequently just to break away from the travelling packs of stupid people.
There was only one time he got pulled over for it, and that was before we met. It was a motorcycle cop that pulled him over, asked to see his papers, then asked where he was going, how fast did he think he was going, the whole schpiel. I guess after all the questions he yelled "WELL SON, DO YOU WANNA GET THERE SAFE?!" boyfriend replied, "well, yeah," cop, "THEN SLOW THE F*** DOWN!" Threw the papers into the car and rode off- no ticket.
The kid in this article seems like an arrogant d-bag though, I have no sympathy for that.
EDIT: for spelling mistake.

I live on a bluff above Interstate 35 as it winds south out of downtown Kansas City. It gets pretty empty at night, as the long-haul truckers generally take the loop around the city. Late, late at night during the week (when the cops aren't out looking for DUIs), I can hear the motorcycle racers screaming up and down the highway, doing at least 100 mph based on the frequency shift. I'm sure they're having fun, but I hope they scout the route ahead to make sure they don't come around a corner into late-night road repair.
