Well I decided to give my Prima exhaust a break

Post by Mr Miller »

Well I decided to give my Prima exhaust a break. One of the brackets keeps cracking and it is getting a tad loud for my taste. So I decided to pick up a NCY exhaust for my Black Jack. I noticed right away that there was a restrictor in the tip, so that is gone now. I am looking to install it Friday, will post a little review and pictures this weekend!

I'm interested in hearing a first hand account of the differences between the two.

I too removed my Prima that came with my Blackjack.

Too much noise.

Stock exhaust is on now, but interested in comments on the NCY pipe.

Someone in an earlier thread put an NCY on his wife's Buddy. He had a Prima on his. He said the NCY had a more throaty sound than the stock pipe, and was less noisy than the Prima - or something to that effect. I'll be curious if Mr Miller comes to the same conclusion.

I'm curious about the "too much noise" thoughts about the Prima. One of the things that immediately drew me to the Blackjack was the growl the pipe makes. Before test driving/buying I read a review about it where people said something to the effect of "after ten minutes, you WILL need ear plugs." But I have not found that to be the case. I LOVE the growl it makes when I am taking off from a stop, but once he finds his happy place, I think it gets pretty darn quiet. Am I missing something here?

(PS: Just had my 500 mile service on Saturday- woot!)

Scooterworks' ad says no performance boost over stock with this pipe, but I'd be interested to see if it's any different after removing the OP-mentioned 'restrictor in the tip'.

Nope. People just have different degrees of tolerance for this, I guess. The Prima is louder than most stock 4T scoots, but not excessively so IMHO. But it might be enough to annoy the neighbors if you leave for work early in the morning.

Often when someone adds a new exhaust to their scoot, I'll ask, "How's the pipe?" The response is often, "I love it! It's LOUD!" Personally, I care little about the noise; I want to know if it makes the scooter go faster!

I head in Sat morning for my 2500 mile service! I'm early by 200 miles but I can tell it would like to be cleaned out, and next weekend is a rally!

I've always been curious about pipes, because of the wide array of opinions. They keep wanting to sell me one at the local shop, and I do like the sound, but I dunno if I $200 like it.

I do really like the sound and looks I get with the Prima but I live on a long steep hillside with lots of neighbors and it gets really loud climbing the hill, especially since I put the UNI filter on. Also the stainless steel top bracket has broken once and is cracked again so I decided to try something new. I really do love the look of the Prima better though...

I personally don't like loud. But I do like a deep soft rumble. A throaty quieter sound would appeal to me over something harsh and loud. But I've never heard a Prima on a Buddy, so I have no idea if I'd think it's too loud.

As far as a performance increase, I've seen many posters claim they didn't get any performance boost with the Prima/re-jet. If that's true, then the NCY is no different, but might sound better. Also, you won't have to re-jet with the NCY.

I had to take the prima pipe off my Rat because with the pod-filter it was just too loud. I put a stock pipe on and did notice a slight decrease in power, but it was expected. The Rat's a 2t after all. It's still pretty loud with the stock pipe and pod-filter.
That said, if I lived out in the sticks, I wouldn't have cared about the noise.

I leave at 4:30 am with Prima pipe and I have not had anyone complain.

Lol sound is all relative, you guys wanna hear loud, you should hear my Cammed Gto with full exhaust and headers, then complain about a pipe. :) it will be enlightening.

Now back on topic, this seems like alot of money for no gain in performance

Well, I have to say it is almost as loud as the Prima!?! With the restrictor in place it is higher pitched and actually a bit louder than with it removed. Looking at the pipe size and how it felt on the road, I would say it has the same performance gains as the Prima pipe. (I don't care what the company says, I don't think it is a stock style replacement muffler) My wife and one of my friends both think it is a touch quieter and that it has a better sound to it than the Prima. It sounds louder to me, at least from the drivers seat, but I will take their word for it.

I will add pictures tomorrow:)
