what to do with "totaled" buddy????

Hey folks,
Danny here.

It turns out that when I got hit last week, my buddy's frame was bent and the scoot is now totaled.

so what do I do?

The front and rear luggage racks are untouched
as was the shield.

the back white wall is apparently fine.

does anyone have any experience with this situation?

how much can I get for parts ?

I was shocked that this thing is "totaled"

I'd like to squeeze something out of that lil guy....

I need to buy a new scooter, or small motorcycle.

something that shifts.

I bet someone would love a nice engine. Maybe even your local Buddy dealer.

I don't know of any manual shift new scooters on the market right now. If you are VERY patient you may want to consider the Stella. You may be able to get a new '06 Bajaj Chetak.

Do you have full coverage insurance? If so, the co will keep the scoot once they give you the money (unless you buy it back). If you don't have full coverage, then I'd salvage any useable parts from it and either sell them to recoup some of the loss, or hang on to them for use on your replacement Buddy!

my scoot had a few usable parts left and it turns out the insurance company awarded it to the tow place to cover their outstanding bill (they it sit untouched for 3 weeks)

Yup, when our Buddy was totaled, as VitaminC said, the insurance company hauled it off to some undisclosed secret place after paying us off in full.

If the insurance co. is not taking it, you could part it out but the problem is that you'd have to sit on an incomplete scooter until you found buyers for all the salvageable parts, then take dismantle and ship the parts as you sell them.

I suspect the easiest parts for you to sell would be accessories and undamaged body panels. You could probably sell these for more than half of retail, easy. You may be able to benefit from Genuine's poor supply chain. It seems a lot of people are waiting for various engine parts. But how much time and effort do you want to put into selling a part that's less than $50 new?

Your best bet may be to talk to Mike at NoHo (local dealer) and see if he'd buy it for parts. There's some kind of salvage title process involved here. Mike may have an excess of salvage Buddys right now with at least 3 recently totaled ones and probably some older ones currently sitting in his garage.

For what its worth, there are two damaged Buddy's on eBay right now that are both low mileage runners with no engine damage. One is in the Midwest (Parma Heights, OH) and one in California.

i didn't have collision on my buddy, but its replacement value is covered by either, the other parties insurance, or my uninsured motorist insurance.
state farm is still investigating if the woman who hit me is covered.

so I'm without scooter, and I don't know if progressive will take my wreck.

but if possible I will sell the accessories here .....

Are you planning on replacing the Buddy either way?

Would hate to have another local rider out of the game and I was looking forward to joining a Lazy Bones Scooter Club ride some time in the future!

I'm for sure getting another scooter.

but I want something that shifts... (although the vespas that shift are huge.
and I foolishly thought that lx150's were 4 speed, but now I know that they are just newer ET4's)

So after I get my check, I'll probably look around for an old vespa.

currently I am enjoying my daily carpool experience.

Danny,

If the other party was at fault, their insurance should cover most of the cost of a replacement. This is what happened in my first accident, but the other driver claimed full responsibility...I ended up paying $6.32 out of pocket for my replacement.

If you can't get the insurance money, talk to Mike and see if he'll buy the engine from you for a couple hundred bucks. He'll just need your title to be transferred to him. But, as Eric said, I don't know if he'll need another one right now, as he already has a few totalled in the back. If I knew someone with engineering/metal working skills, I wanted to try to do an engine transplant project with my Mojito...that would make for a fun ride!

Also, contact a lawyer who works on contingency to see if you have a case for injuries/pain/suffering. If you need a name, PM me and I can refer you to one who helped me recover $4K, on top of getting me a new scoot.
