Luckily, I have not had this, nor know anyone who has, but it is so little known, and so horrific, that I wanted folks to be aware of the symptoms in case this knowledge might one day save their own, or some else's life.
Excerpt taken from the NNFF.ORG website: "A 1996 CDC report estimates from 500 to 1500 cases per year of necrotizing fasciitis of which 20% die. In 1998 the NNFF estimates the figure to be higher..."
If you have never heard about Necrotizing Fascitis, or want a clarifying definition about it, click here.
Please click here to read about the symptoms. Because the beginning symptoms look like so many other minor afflictions, you need to be aware!
Here are some stories from survivors of this horrible infection.
If you are squeemish when looking at pictures of cut away tissue, don't click on this link. As horrific as this was for this person, at least he survived, and didn't lose a limb, or worse.
Please be extra cautious and wash your hands when ever in doubt. Since that cannot totally prevent it, also pay close attention to any symptoms that may develop, and BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE in making sure that your doctor rules this out as a cause. Catching this early is the key to survival and how well you are physically afterwards if you do survive!
From the stories people have shared, among the places they have gotten this infection from include: a scrape on their knuckles, a needle prick when getting a shot, getting an ingrown toenail removed, a BRUISE (no skin obviously broken), a root from a tree poking through their skin as they did yardwork, attending to sores on their child's fingers, etc. You get the idea...commonplace things.
