treadless tire? oops

I have no good excuse...but in my defense, my beloved Buddy was running just fine for so long....

I've been feeling swervy in the past couple weeks, and finally looked at my rear tire--realized the middle 2 inches or so has no tread left.

Yeah...definitely need to replace it.

I have 2 questions for you folks:

1. The front tire (a Conti zippy) seems fine, but should I replace it at the same time?

2. What rear tire are the cool kids buying nowadays? N.B. I hate whitewalls.

I greatly appreciate your advice, as I gingerly ride around town, eager to order a new tire or two.

Yikes! Be careful!
You don't have to replace both tires. The front tire will last forever.
I know some will chime-in about how the handling might be affected with two different tires but I've done it and not noticed anything. YMMV.
I hear good things about the Conti Zippy's so maybe just go with that on the rear to match the front.
The Heidenau's get rave reviews here on MB (I'll get that in before Eric!) but they are pricey and can be hard to find.
I have tried a few different brands and I now stick with the Michelin S1's because they come in 100/90X10 which I prefer over the 3.5X10 size tires and they are a great price at $37.

Thanks! Why do you prefer that size? Are they easier to fit? I'm intrigued.

The 100/90 10's tend to be just a little wider than the 3.5X10's.
I dunno, just makes me feel better having a little more "rubber on the road".
I think they look better being a little wider, too (I know that's silly).

Granted, there are slight differences in size between manufacturers, too.

Awesome! I find that compelling. I would love to have wider tires, to be frank.

All I have around here is grid-grid-grid through corn and soybean fields. With an occasional "hill" over an interstate.
