Couple of Noob questions... Are these really miles?

Post by DudeDog »

I'm still in the break-in period with my Buddy 50. It seems like, and I have no scientific data to prove or disprove this, my odometer is pretty generous recording "miles". I've got 420 "miles" but it seems more like 350 at most. I can't belive those are kilometers.

Anyone else have similar thoughts on this?

Also...

My oil light is starting to flicker on and off when I go up or down hills. Since I'm going to do my first oil change at 500 "miles" I thought I would just top off the oil. The Buddy manual says to use 2 cycle or SAE 30 oil. I got some 2 cycle oil but want to make darn sure I don't mess this up.

This is the same stuff I would mix with gasoline if I was going to put it in my leaf blower? Or should I look for 2 cycle "motorcycle" oil.

Don't want to make a stupid mistake.

I believe your local autoparts store should have 2 cycle scooter/motorcycle oil. When in doubt, ask the person at the counter, they should be able to help. Odd that it's flickering already though at less than 500 miles.

As far as the mileage is concerned.....not sure what to tell you. My miles seem reasonably accurate (for something with 10" wheels)

you dont need to change a 2 strokes oil. just make sure it's supply tank is always full. it needs to burn it to lube itself.

They aren't kilometers. :) While the speedometers on two-wheelers are notoriously "optimistic" (the Buddy's seems to be about 10% faster than it's really going), the US government is pretty picky about vehicle mileage, so I think the odometer is about as accurate as you can hope for.

On a 2-stroke, the only "oil change" is the oil in the gearbox. The engine oil is burned along with the gas. Some people top it off periodically, others just pour a full quart in when the light comes on. If your oil light is coming on already (not just when you start the engine), it probably means someone didn't fill the oil tank all the way when the bike was prepped. I get (rough guess) 800 miles on a quart. But you might want to mention it when you bring it in for service, just in case it's burning more than needed.

In my experience, most places that sell motor oil will only have two kinds (if that) of "2-stroke" oil: marine and the stuff you put in everything else. If you read the bottle, the non-marine oil will have pretty much every other 2-stroke powered device you can think of listed, including motorcycles. Use that one. The two kinds aren't identical, but they are close enough that you can use marine 2-stroke in a scoot in an emergency.

On a 2T, your first service (including gear oil change) should have been at 200 miles.
500 miles is for 4T's.

I see now my odometer is registering BDU's, not miles.
