New Here - GB 125 Final Drive Questions

Post by Jim Moore »

Hi folks,

I'm becoming a scooter enthusiast! I have an opportunity to pick up a GB 125 pretty cheap, mainly because the final drive is trashed. If I buy this thing I will probably end up replacing everything that turns or rotates in the rear end, bearings, gears, etc. I have bearing puller. Do I need any other special tools? Do the gears have to be pressed? Are there aftermarket items that are better and/or cheaper?

Thanks in advance,

Bearings need to be driven, but the gears do not.

Unfortunately there aren't any final gear options that fit the buddy.

But everything is pretty straight forward, if you have the replacement gears and bearings, all you really need is a bearing driver and a driveshaft puller/driver.

I made my own with some threaded rod a steel crossbar and a large hex bolt plus some wing nuts and washers.

big hole is threaded for the hex bolt and the smaller holes are straight pass through. You just run the threaded rods through case bolt holes and secure them with washers and lock nuts then tighten down the cross bar so that it (with the hex bolt) is tight against your drive shaft, then start torquing the hex bolt, it will drive the drive shaft out of the engine case.

use hand tools, you want to supply gentle but persistent pressure.

Good luck,

I read here on MB that the Psycho edition of the 125 had a different final drive gear ratio that was pretty sweet.
You might send out some feelers regarding that as long as you are replacing.

Thanks guys. Sym, I'm not really picturing what you're saying, but I haven't really seen the inside of one of these things yet. I'll refer back to this thread in the event that I actually buy this thing.

Sweet! I guess you bolt that onto the case then use the big threaded rod to push the driveshaft out?
