LED running lights

Post by C2 »

Hey all,

After much searching on the forums, I finally upgraded my deadlight/running lights to LED lights. I went with the 1156 LED Bulb - Single Intensity 1 x 3 Watt High Power LED w/ Reflector Lens from superbrightleds.com.

The cool part - besides the extra light/visibility - is that they seem to work fine with my stock Flasher and Voodoo BOB adapter!

Hey, looks sharp! Does the buddy come stock with 'running lights' or are those normally just blinkers? If normally blinkers, how did you make them work as running lights?

They come with what are affectionately known as "dead-lights." They are the original PGO turn signals that don't meet the DOT regulations for turn signals. So, Genuine adds the amber blinkers to the headset to meet DOT regulations.

I ordered a BOB adapter from Voodoo Scooter Parts about three years ago that lets you use the dead-lights as running lights AND turn signals along with the DOT blinkers. VSP isn't around anymore, but I believe you can still order them from the person who took over the business.

To expand on C2's answer, prior to them being imported to the USA, when they disconnect the wiring for the deadlights, they are taped to the inside of the front panel on your scooter, where they can easily be found and put in to service with the BOB adaptor that Lil Buddy came up with, and Ethan (VSP) still (or last I heard, at least) supplies. Sorry for the run-on sentence

Clicking on the link C2 provided will give you many cool ideas as to what you can do with them.

This seems like a great product. Does anybody know if it will work on a Stella? Or if he has designed a product that works on the Stella?

Does your Stella use high mounted DOT turn signals? The pictures on the Genuine website don't show any on either model.

I would be willing to bet there is an LED bulb that will work with the Stella turn signals. If you can pull one of the bulbs and let me know the numbers stamped into the base, I will cross reference it for you.

Hey VWGuy. I realize now that my post wasn't particularly clear. I know that they make LEDs that will fit the Stella, what I was referring to was the deadlight adapter that VSP makes for the buddy. It would be awesome to have something like this for the Stella.

Unless there are high mounted DOT turn signals on your Stella and a lower light housing that isn't hooked up, there are no deadlights. You could add a small set of LED driving lights to the Stella to accomplish the same basic effect, but there is no plug and play solution like there is for the Buddy or Blur.

Thanks for the info. I'm new to the forum and am still learning about the deadlight modifications. This thread was very helpful.

Sounds like the LEDs are working OK without the voltage regulators recommended by VSP or did you install the regulators? Please advise & thanks.

SuperBrightLEDs stocks a variety of lamps, but I did notice that some of their stuff is only rated at 12v. Most, however, have ratings for up to 24 or 30v, which should cover any overvoltage except if the scoot's voltage regulator fails completely. I'm thinking that some of the early reported failures were based on lamps not really meant for automotive uses.

That's correct. The LEDs are listed at working on a 24V setup... so that covers the Buddy's spec with room to spare.

I do think it's a bit odd that I didn't have to swap my flasher unit out to go with the new deadlights/BOB adapter. The only thing I can think of is that I still have the stock blubs in the DOT signals.

An added bonus I guess!

Correct, the LEDs have a very tiny load compared to incandescent, and since you still have the DOT bulbs in play, the flasher operates as it should.

If the DOTs were gone or replaced with LED, the flasher would see their tiny load and flash quickly, thinking the bulbs were burned out and letting you know.

With the BOB Combo Adapter installed and the stock incandescent bulbs in the blinkers, I replaced the incandescent running lights with 12v LEDs purchased from Auto Zone at $16.95 a pair. So far, they're holding up fine.
