Good Buy??

Post by swartzieee »

How much would you offer for this Buddy 150? How hard would it be to make the plastic shine like new?

I think that price is right. it's got more miles on it than many used, but if it has been maintained, that shouldn't be anything.

with the plastics and mileage, I thought it was a bit over priced. I was thinking more in the 7-8 hundred dollar range.

Depends a lot on the local market, and your intended use. Around here the market would be soft for this bike. I'd consider $1400 a negotiable price for a 150 with 17K in other than pristine condition.

eh, it's hard to price it below 1k at all, because then it really isn't worth it to sell it if you bought it new and took care of it.

If they would take 1200, then that would be OK. Truly maintained 1400 isn't terrible, depending on tires, brakes, and belts.

if I invest 5k into something and drive it for 3 years, selling it for less than a certain amount wouldn't be worth it unless there was no way to use it ever again. if you're just selling it to buy an upgrade, there has to be a certain amount of incentive. To sell a solid running, somewhat limited edition, well maintained machine for 25% new value means they made a poor buying decision. Clearly not the case if they got 17k miles out of it in 2.5 years.

The mileage really isn't that high; with proper maintenance it should last that long again, and then some.

The plastic can be removed and repainted fairly easily and inexpensively. Or new replacement panels tend to run around $50 for each part (give or take a bit, depending).

His ad does say "$1,400 OBO" so after you test ride it and you feel comfortable with it, I'd offer him $1,000 and see what happens. He's had the bike on CL for some time now (I'm down here in Phx for the winter and I've been watching all the CL Buddy ads) so he might just be in the right mood to accept your offer. You never know until you try. As far as the 17K miles are concerned, if he's got service receipts, I don't see that as any big deal. Hey, it's a Buddy!!! Re. the faded plastic, it's never going to shine like new again although you might try some of that white polishing compund available at your FLAPS and that could take some of the edge off. Good luck!

I agree with you that $1400 seems high for the mileage. Obviously, different markets warrant different prices, but I bought a 2008 Buddy 150 with less than 1300 miles for $1750 last spring. Kelley Blue Book shows around $1400 for trade in, and around $2000 for retail, but that assumes good condition and average mileage. 17k is about three times the average mileage assumed by KBB.

I think that's high for a scoot with that many miles. We all know they can do that many miles, but there are so many out there with a thousand because someone became disinterested, why not get one of those?

That said, your market may be hot all the time (can you ride all year? is there a strong community? are the streets safe for scooters?). Here in New England, you can get a deal because of our weather.

As for cleaning up the plastics, try Mothers Back-to-Black (it's not just for black): http://www.mothers.com/02_products/06108.html

Indeed we can ride all year; well, except for today when the sky-plumbing is leaking. There is one pretty active Meet-up group, run by MB's own GlenG, but many of the more active members ride maxis, and favor higher speed rides. Finally, Phoenix is a.) mostly flat and b.) big housing development heaven, so many of the smaller, more interesting roads don't go for any distance, which means to get around town requires riding on the major arterials, which are straight as a tight string. Most are in good condition though, so marked at 40 - 45, traveled at 45 - 60.

i have an identical buddy, same year! If you get a product called, "Back to Black" at the car parts store it will bring most of the red back to the plastic.

How many miles does yours have? I believe the one for sale has 17k. which to me is a lot and worries me a bit of what parts will need to be replaced soon.

17k isn't too much.

might need things like rollers, or belts, brakes, etc. Or they could be maintained. Ask seller about maintenance, and test drive. see what it feels like to you.
