new scooter laws in virginia

Post by chub1965 »

http://www.wric.com/global/Category.asp ... Id=8672265 probably a good idea but i imagine sales of 50cc scoots will tank.most people start with a 50cc because of the lack of regulation.what do you think.

doesn't seem unreasonable.

our 50cc sales haven't dipped much since CO did the same. We still don't require helmets, but there is a registration, and all scoots after '10 have a title. You must also have a valid driver's license for 49cc, and insurance.

They let it go for a long time but there were so many people that had revoked licenses using it as a loophole. Which is fine with me. If you aren't licensed to drive a car, having you on a scooter probably isn't going to help much. It has started to help recovery of stolen scoots too, though I don't think Denver police have the resources to give a lot of care.

The only 50cc sales that will tank are the Chinese scooters used as liquor cycles IMHO.

Next step will e letting bikes park on the sidewalk, and then one day lane splitting!

As long as there's a significant price difference, and a standard driver's license is all you need to operate one, there will still be people who buy 50cc scooters instead. The other regulations they're talking about here (helmets, eye protection, title and registration) aren't much different from here in Michigan (we don't title them) and there are still plenty of 50cc scooters on the streets.

Funny that almost every scooter shown in the clip was greater than 50cc.

AZ law is pretty simple; if it has an engine and it doesn't have working pedals, it needs a title, registration and insurance. There are still plenty of 50s around Phoenix.

This... exactly.

we can only hope for that! It's taken this long and we still let people drive and yap on their cellphones.

I see it as an obvious theft deterrant. Richmond has a plague of thefts, hopefully this will make them more recoverable as well. I like it.

They will check the pedals. As an owner of several true mopeds, they all get the the hairy eyeball from the MVD when I go to register one. I had a helluva fight to get an '81 Express SR re-registered as a moped, as it had been tagged as one in the 80's and had been off-book for a few decades. I did finally get the red tag for it despite the lack of pedals, but that was a lot of legwork for one slow-arse 50.

Now, my pedal-equipped ones have a bit of "special sauce" in 'em, so they're a wee bit faster than the 25mph limit for AZ mopeds. I figure as long as I have an M endorsement and the mandatory insurance, the worst I'll get is grief over the tag. So far, so good. :)
At what point does a hobby become an addiction? I'm uncertain, but after the twelfth scooter, it sorta feels like the latter...

Seriously...I've lost count...

Seven mopeds ...that's still manageable...

Hmmm...

That's a little too close to home. I wonder if North Carolina is next.
