I'm Back! Buddy 125 Rev 2.0

Post by MrChet »

Just picked up a 2008 Black 125 this morning. It's a little rough around the edges but I will clean that up next Winter when the snow hits.

Here's my Genuine History:

1. Sea Foam Buddy 125 -> Sold
2. Green Stella 2T
3. Black Buddy 125

Still have the Stella but I'm not sure if I am going to sell it. The 2T + Manual is fun but after getting on a Buddy again I've really appreciated what decades of technology improvements do for a ride. The Stella is leaking a bit (hub seal I hope and not something in the case). I will be riding the Buddy around while I figure out why the Stella is dripping.

Have a great Spring all and Ride Safe!

Congrats! It's great to see a lot of people who, for whatever reason, give up their Buddys later come back to them.

Having a shifter and an auto has really made me appreciate both! The CVT transmissions are so simple yet work so well. And those who say they're unrefined or don't offer enough control should spend more time learning the ins and outs of throttle control. :)

Yet shifting is SO MUCH FUN and not nearly as much of a pain as some make it sound. I ride my Stella while commuting through heavy traffic most days.

Three spots that can leak in that area:

1) Axle seal. Rear brake with will be lousy and oil will collect in the motor side of the back rim.
2) Spline drive. If the axle nut isn't snug and the gear oil has thinned out from long service(~1000 miles), it oil can travel down the drive shaft splines and leak into the hub center. The telltale for this is oil weeping from the axle nut cap and spattering in a radial pattern over the face of the brake drum.
3)Clutch arm shaft. There is an O-ring in the clutch cover housing that can wear out and leak. Oil leaks from here will wind up on the bottom of the engine case near the oil drain and all over the back of the brake plate. Look for oil on the brake cable sleeve to help differentiate between an hub seal leak and a clutch arm leak.
At what point does a hobby become an addiction? I'm uncertain, but after the twelfth scooter, it sorta feels like the latter...

Seriously...I've lost count...

Seven mopeds ...that's still manageable...

Thanks az_slynch! I degreased it this afternoon and will get out for a couple rides this week to see where it is weeping. It sounds like #3 is the most likely culprit. I need to remove the rear wheel and have a look at the drum. I went around the block after washing the bike and tested the rear brake. It works fine. I will also drain the gear oil to confim if there is any gas in it or if it was/is overfilled.
