NBR: graphics card is fried, need tech advice

Post by Stormswift »

Offspring did it again. Gotta give him A+ for sheer chutzpah. He has older HP elite m9040n loaded with TV tuner. card readers, DVD/ DVR etc etc...I went to remove network access restrictions the other day now yhat school is over- found computer is cranking up but not reading the monitor. Last time it was graphics card. I assume its the samd this time. Monitor is working on another desktop. Sooooooo. Went to Hp website- they no longer carry the card and their parts distributor sites don' t really provide info.
I looked up the video cards on newegg and tigerdirect and while close, it is not the same card. (ours has S-video,HDMI and the other (I forgot the name of that port its white and has longer and shorter part. I' ll post pics as soon as I can). Thd card we have is PCI Express x 16 NVIDIA GeForce 8400 (Ranger) 256 mb, 64 bit memory interface. Anyone has ideas of what I can get instead? Most cards I saw do not have sams ports as ours but since I am not using all of those maybe I can get something else. Problem is I don' t know how to pick a replacement that will work.....
Offspring is shedding crocodile tears( he will be paying for replacement card And mommy labor

The white interface is likely DVI. Have you checked eBay for a replacement? Good luck!

I took a look at my parts stack, and found 3 different PCI-Ex16 cards with DVI-out. As far as I know they were all functioning fine when I pulled them out of the systems they were in.

One is what the note taped to it describes as a "Radeon X300e 128mb", with DVI, VGA, & S-video ports.

From parts number lookups, there is also a Radeon X600SE 256MB Video Card, DVI-out only, and last, a Radeon X600 SE 128M DVI & S-vid.

If one of these'll work for you and you want it, I can mail it to you, its a freebie. Just let me know. :)

What model is the HP? It would be nice to see what interface the card used; AGP*, PCIEX, PCI EISA. Depending on the interface, I could probably get you a card for the cost of shipping - as long as you aren't using S-video or other interfaces.

Better yet, do you know what video card blew up? Is it a high-end gamer card, or a general use one?

If you read her first post it said "PCI Express x 16 NVIDIA GeForce 8400 (Ranger) 256 mb"

That card does not have a TV tuner on it.

Do you watch TV on your computer often?

He does watch TV on it but I think TV tuner card is separate from this graphics card and is elsewhere on the board...maybe I am wrong....

If the TV tuner is a different card you should be fine with the one you linked to as the replacement then.

the vid card you mention is very outdated as is the 8500GT. it will work, however

it sounds like an older system you are working with. i have am AMD 5600+ based system. very outdated. i went from a similar card as you to a couple more powerful cards until those became outdated and i came full circle to a less powerful current gen card that was more powerful then the previous two POWERFUL cards

this might work as it has low power supply requirements and is inexpensive. might want to make sure it fits in your case. it should. it also requires no direct connection to a power supply. just plug and play. its PCI-E 2.0 but no worries its backward compatible. i like the card, myself. or did, i should say

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 7AodXXcANw

i would stick with nvidia imo. otherwise uninstalling the old drivers for new, something you will do anyway....can be a pain in the butt if switching to an AMD / ati based graphics solution

if your HP elite is one with an intel e6600, q6600 or something similar you should be good to go. so many processors around its mind boggling. either way the above card will be a vast improvement over what you had and the 8500GT, as well

Thank you everyone for advice and those who offered the cards. I am going to pull kiddo' s card just to make sure it matches the pic of the new one and will fit.Don't know what I would do withoht the combined wisdom and brain power of this forum. Whether its my bike or tech stuff- I know where to run for help. Little did I know when I bought my scooter that this forum would be so much more then just a place to ask when bike stuff needs to be done. Amazing. You are all amazing. I will post how it works out when " surgery" is completed. Thank you again

I'd stay away from anything by Elitegroup my self. I find there products to be cheaply made and not very trust worthy.

And of course if you want to save some money there is this site

Pulled the old card. Looks to be a match. Same manufacturer, slightly more memory. New one ordered at $29.99.

I think I see why the card may have died. A lot of dust caked in that fan. I have had this happen before. Too much dust will keep the fan from turning which will lead to overheating and the eventual failure of said card.

Thats what I was also thinking. I will go over everything inside the box and clean out dust. It is not even safe for it to be this dusty

elitegroup is OK. not like a super gamble, and the warranty is sufficient. i would have taken it with the rebate from newegg over that ANCIENT 8500GT.

it would have sped up the computer for graphic intensive tasks and been a BIG memory upgrade with its 1 gig onboard. things like photoshop, video editing, and even watching HD playback or browsing large photo files would have been improved. and while not a "gaming" card it would have run modern games, at least

stormswift, your offspring would have jumped for minor joy, at least :P

I have had MB's and Video from them all were crap, so either its just my bad luck or their quality. I err on the side of quality. yuck.
