Registering 50cc in CA

Post by lilguy »

I'm At The DMV And They Have No Idea How To Register My Buddy 50. My Questions:

Do I Need A Motorcycle Endorsement?
Do I Need Insurance?
How Should It Be Classified At The DMV?

I've Been At The DMV For Three Hours Now And Are Debating The Classification.

Thank you.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/motorcycles/motorcycles.htm

A motor-driven cycle has 149cc or less engine size. CVC §405
A motor-driven cycle has to be registered and the driver must have a motorcycle license (M1).

More info (don't know how current but it says you can register by mail):

Not MUCH help, but ----

I moved back to LA from ATL in November and still haven't registered my ride - BUT - I did take my written test and get the 12 month motorcycle permit. It will remain pending until you take the driving test, BUT - you will have to register the bike before you can take the test. To register the bike, you will have to get insurance.

I didn't need any of this in Atlanta and the DMV is just stressful but I know I need to be a responsible citizen an just go. I know !!!!!!!

. . . However, I ride 20 miles to/from work everyday and ride through Mid-City and the police never bother me for my dealer plates.
If you want to know where a road leads, ask someone on their way back.

Yes, you do need an M1 endorsement.

You can get a permit just by taking the written test. The restrictions are no riding at night and no riding with a passenger.

And here's the loophole:

NOTE: Three wheeled motorcycles or a motorcycle with a side car require only a Class C driver license. California Vehicle Code (CVC) §12804.9

Find a way to put a side car on it and your good to go it seems.
