Buddy 125 ran out of gas now it wont stay running

i ran out of gas as I pulled up to the pump. After putting gas in it was hard to get started. Once it was started it kept stalling on the way home and almost dying. Once home I turned it off then it wouldn't start again. Put in a new battery and cleaned out all the old fuel and cleaned the carb. Started right up and ran for about a min or so then died. Now it wont start again. Seems like it wants to but no go. I was thinking maybe the fuel filter.? Any ideas?

Might check your hoses and see if it is kinked. I ran mine out on purpose to see how much to fill it up. It started right up.

Did you fill it beyond the little silver lip a couple of inches down in the filler nozzle? You don't want to go beyond there, as the gas may then tend to spill in to places that may make your life inconvenient for a while...perhaps resulting in the issue you have.

Of course there could be another reason for your issue, but this is a possibility.

Ok so I checked and I didn't over fill it. Ii started right up this morning, it ran well for a few minutes then died and won't start again.

Could possibly be because the fuel at the very bottom of your fuel tank had some gunk in it - the one time I let my old Metro run completely out of fuel, I had similar issues. I tossed in some fuel stabilizer to help clean it out, and after running her for a little bit she was fine. So, maybe tossing in some Seafoam might help.

Sea Foam.

I have used this in Diesels, 2-Strokes, Cars, Trucks and it works great. Just used it to clean up a 2003 Vino 2-Stroke that someone had sitting for 5 months (she confessed that the tank of gas was probably a year old with no treatment) with only occasionally starting it before selling it to me. 1 tank of fresh fuel has it running clean and strong with no issues.

FYI, here is the relevant section of the troubleshooting flowchart from the official PGO manual (located here on Modern Buddy) Please forgive the translation. Their "fuel gauze" is the fuel filter and their "auto cock" is the petcock. If you've checked that the hoses aren't crimped, then my money is on the fuel filter. It's cheap and easy to replace.

In your case, considering the backstory of running out of fuel and possibility that you sucked some crap into your carb, I would add Item (3') to their list which is, Main Jet Clogged. I call it 3 prime, because you'd have to pull the carb to check their Item 3, (carb) float is blocked, so you'd want to check the main jet at the same time.

If replacing the fuel filter and cleaning/inspecting the carb doesn't do it, then replace the petcock. Be sure you mark the hoses so you replace them correctly. (Ask me how I stupidly learned this the hardest possible way with a neighbor's Chinese scooter.
