Buddy 170i - rattle noise under heavy throttle

Post by bradsarno »

In my 170i I'm hearing a rattling noise that sounds very much like a physical vibration/knocking. It only happens under heavy throttle. It sounds like it's coming from the area of the air intake. When I tap hard on the cowl (not the scoop, but the part that the scoop screws onto with the grill where you can see the white fan) I can make it almost do the same sound. Anyone ever had that intake area apart to know what may be rattling or knocking together when the vibrations are heavy? Our 125 doesn't make this sound.

The 170 does have a little more "muffler" noise than the 125. see if you can find another 170 to listen to and see if its the same. My friend, Paul has a 170 and its def. louder than the 125 at full throttle

Thanks,

I do have a friend with a 170i, so I'll check hers out and compare. It just doesn't sound or feel like it's coming out the tailpipe, feels more mechanical and plastic/rattly and coming from the area near the air intake, and only under heavy engine torque, which also happens to be when the tail pipe is making the most noise too, so maybe that's it.

if your talking about the cooling fan it could be rattle-ing around it is held on with 4 screws 8mm if my memory serves me correctly. Check to see if all the plastic mounts on the fan cover and duct are tight.

has your scoot fallen over on the right side?

I think they all "Rattle"

I have had this complaint since I bought my 170. Ride a Kymco or a Vespa and they are essentially whisper quiet.
The 170i sounds like a trashing machine. You would swear there are loose parts, something in the engine is about to exit, the mufflers coming apart, or something. Anyway, seems to be normal. some is from the injection system I think. I've ridden more then one and it seems common.
The most irritating is when cruising. The bang, knock, or whatever is not consistent like if was injection. random rattling.
Bottom line, its noisy but run like a rabbit.

Also check the exhaust bolts.

My 161 is pretty noisy as well. Its had a what sounds like piston slap ever since I put it together. I've had it checked out. Doesn't seem to be hurting itself. Has tons of power.
