Remove or just disable the oil pump?

Post by basilfawlty »

I've had a pretty good oil leak on my buddy 50 for the past year. I've taken the pump off and sealed everything with gasket sealer and it still leaks.

I have a 70cc kit so I end up mixing my fuel a little bit anyway. I also have a 25L flo 'n go tank in my garage that I would be happy to mix once. It should last me all year.

So. Am I better off just removing the oil intake hose from the pump and plugging the hole or can I also remove the pump shaft inside to prevent it from even trying to pump oil? I'm not sure what the pump is connected to on the bottom end so I don't want to mess anything up by taking the pump shaft out.

Nobody has done this before? I read this thread where someone deleted the pump but it's a different model. This seems like a pretty simple mod, I'm just scared that the shaft is holding things together down in the crankcase.

Advice would be much appreciated.

On my Sym DD50 I was able to remove the oil pump shaft and then reinstall the oil pump to seal it up again.

I would take it apart and look at. Lots of people delete the oil pumps. I would not mix a years worth of fuel. Bad idea with ethanol in fuel. I don't like stabilizer either. Fresh fuel is best, especially with a 70cc kit.

I have taken the shaft out and it's got a gear on the end. I just don't know if that gear needs to be in place to hold other bits together. I was hoping someone here has seen the inside of the gearbox to avoid me having to dissemble it all. If I do end up doing that, I'll snap some pics and report back.

The "year's worth" of fuel is really just 3-4 months of summer for me. I'm mostly a fair-weather rider. :)

It's been a couple of years... But as I recall the shaft was attached to the end that bolts down and I was able to remove the gear to keep the oil pump from turning. That gear just needs to be disengaged from a small gear on the crankshaft. It's also possible that I removed the shaft too and the unattached oil pump bolted back on and sealed like normal.

The whole assembly should slide out when unbolted so that you can look at it.

So ... I removed the oil pump and shaft. There is a small washer down at the crank that had to be fished out with wire.

I took it for a ride and noticed odd behaviour at zero throttle when travelling at high (ok, high for a buddy) speed. After 3-5 seconds of idling at high speed the engine would start braking, as though there was suddenly a lot of internal resistance. Needless to say I turned around and rode home with the throttle up the whole way.

I wonder if the oil pump normally adds extra oil based on rpm even when the throttle is off. If the engine needs that additional oil then deleting the pump is a recipe for disaster.

Anyway, that's where I'm at. Leaking oil but still cruising. :)
