Buddy 170 vs. Vespa 150

Post by litespeed »

Hello. I'm new to this forum. I'm sure my question has been asked here before. To think differently would be dumb. How does the Buddy 170 stack up against the Vespa 150? Are there any reliability issues with the 170. Thanks for answers.

This post compares the Buddy 125 to an LX, but most of it is still relevant:

The only major difference would be in the speeds. The 170 is faster on the top end than a stock Vespa 150.

There will reportedly;y be a new 3V Vespa 150 sometime next year; probably unveiled this November. It'll perform more like the 170, I think.

The 170 has proven very reliable. There were some early issues with the FI settings, but I think these have been resolved.

I still have a Vespa LX ('06, carbureted unlike newer ones) and it's a great scoot. I also bought it before the Buddy was available. Given a $1000 price difference between a 170i and a Vespa S 150, and the differences in cost of ownership over time, I'd probably opt for the Buddy.

I know, I'm probably biased, but I don't have anything bad to say about the Vespa 150s as scooters. Owning a Vespa (even a new one) is a bit of a labor of love, though, and is more costly and sometimes a bit frustrating.

Well, I own an LX150 as well. One of the fuel injected bikes. It is a great ride and I enjoy it very much. As Eric says, owning a Vespa is something of a labor of love. Maybe not the most cost effective, but certainly a joy. Mine has been quite reliable and does everything I ask of it. On a tight budget I'd go with the Buddy. A lot of scooter for the money. But, if those beautiful Italian lines call to you - sometimes only a Vespa will do  .
