Electric Starter Problems

Post by justa1993jb »

Hey I looked around the forum but I was not able to find some with the same problem. The issue is that my electric starter isn't working, but kick starting works. When I press the electric starter I can hear a spin of the fan or whatever it is, the same sound as when kick starting it, but it is very short and it stops. So I kind of think it is the battery but the lady I bought it from said she changed it a year ago and she has the receipt to prove it. So could the battery be bad only after a year of use? I had that problem a month ago but then my boyfriend suggested that I connect it to a battery tender and it worked, but now it doesn't work even that way...

Please help! Any suggestions are really appreciated.

It's most likely the battery. The age of the battery is one factor, but how you ride, how often you ride and how far you ride all affect its lifespan.

An auto parts place can test the battery to see if it's okay. It probably needs replacement if a Tender won't charge it.

I recently switched from the standard Yuasa battery to a Scorpion AGM battery. A little less expensive, no setup involved (adding acid or electrolytes), ships charged. Seems to be doing quite well, doesn't need the Tender.

my battery went dead around a month ago, too. OEM, came with scooter. the yussa, or whatever it is? i didn't bother load testing it as i knew after three years of less then steady use it was done. so i charged it with a tender and like op, it went about a month more. if a bit weakly

so i began kick starting it and actually like it. i feel connected with the scooter a bit more when manually starting it. but its not always the thing to do imo, and it dirty's up my shoes sometimes! so i bought a cheap(er) battery off Amazon for $32 and hope it goes awhile. warranty says 18 months which is around half the time the oem went at half the price. "so....get what you pay for," i suppose

i was a bit surprised after removing the battery from the scooter the blinkers would not function right? i thought the scooter would function 100% so long as the motor is running, but i guess not? headlight worked fine, but i did not check the horn. blinkers would not blink and at first only buzzed. put the old, DEAD battery in, blinkers blink, no buzz

but yes op, sounds like the battery. i bought this one but like kicking the scoot alive, so will still do that, too:

I have a 2009 RH50 with 10k miles on her.
I recently bot this TMS Gel batt: YTX4L-BS for under $25 shipped.
No fluids or prep needed. Reads 12.89v right out of the box. Just install and ride. So far, so good.

For what you save on the cost of the battery its eaten up by the shipping cost (almost $11). How much does it weigh, being its a GEL type battery?

It says GEL on it, and the AMZN listing says shipping weight 5 lbs. So I assume all of that is correct. It has been working great so far. Can't get one that cheap at any of the scooter shops around Boston.
