Dead battery advice

Post by klr6773 »

I've only been able to ride a few times since October but started the scooters every few weeks and let them run in the garage for five to ten minutes at a time. Went to start them up today,One scooter is now absolutely dead, the other still turns over but must not have enough juice to start...

Our friend who rides motorcycles says we can jump the scooters using a car. I'm afraid that's too much zap and it's going to blow them up! Can anyone give me a yea or nay?

If you jump the scooter from a car that isn't running, that should be be safe for the scooter. In effect, you're just hooking up a larger 12V battery in parallel with your discharged 12V battery, and leaving the car's alternator out of the picture. In theory, if you did this enough times without starting the car, you'd deplete the car's battery, but it's got plenty of juice to spare for just a li'l scooter start.

Many thanks for your confirmation. I did a bit of google work in the interim and found it to be ok. Worked just fine, then took both out for nice ride. Will look to buy the relatively inexpensive little chargers I saw mentioned on other posts here.

Idling the scooter for a few minutes isn't enough to recharge the battery; letting it sit and run for a longer period of time might work, but to be effective you kinda need to rev the engine by going for a ride.
