Speedometer Problems
Hey everyone! I finally started the first commute of the season to work today (not by choice, my car just got deemed totalled!) and unfortunately I ran into some problems with my speedometer.
I am not sure why, but it seems that my speedo is off by SOO much more than it normally is. I normally know that when it used to say 30mph indicated its about 18-20mph actual and when I hit 50mph indicated it's really about 40mph actual.
However today on the way to work the needle went so far beyond the 50mph mark it was ridiculous! When I was keeping up with cars in a 35mph zone it was indicating around 55-60mph. At one point on a 40mph stretch where I was probably going around 45mph actual, the needle was laying flat on the right side of the speedometer...as in probably 80-90mph indicated (if the speedo would go that far...it stops at 50).
I don't know what prompted the change in how my speedo reads how fast I am going because I never messed with the cable that is supposed to relay that info to it, but apparently something is going wrong....that or everyone is going 90mph on the way to work.
Any ideas to fix it?

Is it really supposed to be that far off though? It used to be about 10 mph over now its 30+ over...that seems excessive even for "optimistic" speeds.

I usually ignore the speedometer these days, just for the reasons you have already hit on. If actual speed is a concern you may want to invest in an after market solution. There are threads on the subject, I have read them. Do some searching, you should be able to find them.

I don't want to just ignore the problem, I want to get it fixed. I have done a bunch of Googling to search the forums but all of the replacements, whether it be an aftermarket or cheap bike speedo, aren't what I'm looking for. I want to know if there are any tangible options to repair it myself, like replace the cable or do some troubleshooting. I just don't know where to start on a RH.

Your first place to start would be the front tire. Since tire diameter will adversely affect how your speedometer reads the rotation coming from the sensor. If your tire is significantly worn this will affect your speed at the gauge, one reason to keep those tires changed and in good repair.
