Throttle Cable Question

Post by Chuffy »

Hello all. Longtime lurker, first time caller here. I have an older Buddy 125 and I was having multiple problems that all pointed to a bum carburetor. So I ordered a new GY6 compatible carb and with lots of sweat and cursing (I am not very mechanically inclined) I got it installed. Now when trying to hook up the throttle cable it seems a wee bit short. The fully extended cable will not allow the throttle to touch the idle screw. And when I start up the bike it kicks on in high and no amount of throttling will bring it down so I have to switch it off. Have I missed something in the carb install process that has
messed up my throttle cable?

Unhook the throttle cable completely from the carb and start it up. If it runs fast (after a decent warmup), then set the idle to an appropriate speed. This at least will take the cable and tension out of the picture for troubleshooting.

After that, if the cable won't attach to the throttle arm without slack, likely due to the difference in physical carb architecture between stock and your new GY6, you may need to find a new (longer) throttle cable. Not sure if you can do just the internal cable (fairly easy) or if you need a longer housing (not fun).

Thanks very much for the rapid reply. I have tried the idle screw and have it all the in and the engine will still not stay in idle but just dies. Also, was there anyway I could have seen the difference in throttle distance on the carburetor when I ordered it? I guess I assumed all GY6 carbs would be interchangeable.

At this point I think it is time to call my local repair shop and hand over the reigns of this mess to a pro!

Ah, but there's the thing: the Buddy isn't -really- a GY6. They only share the rudiments of the power-train geometry. Very few GY6 parts actually work on the PGO/Buddy power train.

Cheaper scoots from the PRC rather than Taiwan use GY6 and are thus more interchangeable.

Well there you go! That explains quite alot actually. So with that being said is there a good replacement carburetor for the 125 that does not run $250? If that is the only way to go then I will put more of a thought into rehabbing the old one!
