Riding with stuff in my pockets
EDIT: I added a poll to this, because I guess I DO have a question!!
The poll is about little pocket stuff- wallet, extra keys, cell phone, iPod, etc. Not groceries, beer, or pizza.
------------------------------------------------------------
I guess I don't really have a question here, but it recently occurred to me that when I ride, I have my cell phone and iPod in my pocket all the time which, in a crash, could be not so great as I slide along the pavement.
I'm talking about my jeans pockets (and yes, I know that jeans offer me no protection), not my riding jacket pockets.
I guess I should toss all that stuff in the glove box before I scoot off?

My first real street motorcycle accident back in '91 was on a Honda 750 Four... At the time I was wearing one of the old-style, 80's cassette Walkmans on my hip. It was crushed, but probably saved my un-armored hip from serious injury.
So ya never know. What kind of abrasion resistance does an iPod have?

That's interesting- and kind of something I was wondering. But I guess I'm more afraid of my iPod or cell melting into my skin. I read somewhere (here or maybe modernvespa) about someone having a cell phone in their jacket pocket and it cracking a rib.StL_Stadtroller wrote:My first real street motorcycle accident back in '91 was on a Honda 750 Four... What does everyone do with stuff in your pockets- pants pockets or jacket pockets? Leave it in?

I leave a lot of stuff in my pockets I probably shouldn't, in particular keys and change. I imagine these could cause some harm should I land on them.
The iPhone goes into the pocket of my Corazzo Max (plug!) so I can feel it vibrate if I get a call, as does my work ID/parking pass and other stuff I might need. (Of course, I pull over if I get a call!)
Anything else either goes in a bag or gets stashed in the scoot.

Well, I would admit that I just got lucky. It's a craps shoot bro, you just never know what craziness will happen in a crash... like straws getting driven into trees and and stuff in twistersjmazza wrote:That's interesting- and kind of something I was wondering. For every guy who's had a brick-sized Walkman pad an extremity in a crash, there's probably another with a circuit board umbedded under his skin. I certainly know my share of VW Microbus drivers with bits of Hazard light switches in their knee-caps.

I tend to just keep everything in my pockets - electronics-wise - simply because they'd just get rattled to death in the storage compartments of my bikes.

I'm actually gonna do that- it's on my list as everything in my glovebox bounces around now. I have a couple other things to buy first for the scoot- I have to moderate my addiction!!robonz23 wrote:shameless plug...

Can you make them out of something that is a bit more "wipe clean" than the materials I've seen? I'm thinking like for my coffee travel mug that seems to leak a bit on serious bumps... I'd love to be able to just wipe the organizer dry rather than having to wash it.
Also, I know that redcass had trouble getting the velcro to stick but I think it was a cold weather issue- are you pretty sure your method of sticking it to the glovebox works well?

Hmmm... what about like a cordura kind of material? Not totally stain resistant (though better than cotton) but I dunno about vinyl. I'm thinking like the type of material that textile jackets are made of (though not of course with the same need for abrasion protection!!).robonz23 wrote:i could make it from vinyl or naugahide something which would easily wipe clean.
two ways to stick the velcro 1. sticky backed velcro 2. glue the velcro on with something strong
Or would that up the cost a bunch?
PM me with your thoughts if you want (or keep it in the thread- it's very helpful for everyone, I think)- I think I'm just gonna go ahead and get one!

my only problem with cordura is getting my hands on some without buying more than i really need. i have to order it off the net then have it shipped. what i used for mine is a duck cloth like what a carhartt jacket would be made of which is nice and sturdy.
i can waterproof any cotton or fleece fabric if you are simply worried about spills. i use nikwax products and swear by the stuff

I was glad to have my phone in a front pocket when I wiped out yesterday, as I was in no mood to crawl over to the scooter. The half eaten snickers bar in the glove box became less important. What I DO regret is that some work keys and other suff I need for work are in the topcase. Locked, yes, but not accesible to me until get to the impound yard when they open tomorrow.

Yeah I've thought that about the phone. I guess most wrecks that do not crush or ruin the phone will leave you able to use it and vice versa.Liz C wrote:I was glad to have my phone in a front pocket when I wiped out yesterday, as I was in no mood to crawl over to the scooter. I did just order a glovebox organizer though so maybe I'll keep the phone with me and put the other stuff (iPod, keys, etc) in that.
