What would you pay for a 2008 Pamplona 150cc?? It's New!

Post by BlackRider125 »

Hi All,

I'm in the market for a Buddy and I am not quite sure what to spend. I had a 125 3 years ago and had to sell it, but now I have been looking to buy a 170i. I've noticed that there are still some almost new Buddy Internationals from the glory years of 2008-2009 out there with almost no mileage.

I'm looking at one right now that is in like new condition, has a front rack, rear rack and top case, and only 500 miles. What would you consider a good price for this?

Would it be better to hold out for a used 170i?

I'm in San Diego - if that helps.

Thanks!

Hi Kevin,

I've owned two 125's and I currently have the 170i. I know I'll catch some slack, but I think the 125 is a better machine. The fuel system is tried, true and bullet proof. My 125 was way smoother, less noisy than the 170i. The 150 doesn't start, and you stand a good chance of figuring it out on your own. Not the case with the 170i.

How much are the asking for the 150? Used with 3,000 miles that's a $1,700 scooter where I'm at.

It's got 500 miles with a top case, rear rack and front rack. They are asking 2000 and willing to take 1700. The scooter Market is really slow Here, in 2009 there were scooters all over the place and this would have sold for probably 23 or 24 hundred, but Now it's slowed down quite a bit and the market is flooded on Craigslist with used scooters and they are not moving very fast. I just don't want to get It and regret that I did not buy a 170.

The Kelly Blue Book average retail value for a 2009 Buddy 150 International is $1945. I'd say that is a pretty good place to start.

If you can get that for $1,700, isn't that over $2,000 less than a new 170i out the door? Buy the 150, and use the savings to get a riding jacket that will make you look like Batman.
They're both excellent scooters. Since the 150 has 500 miles, will they let you take it out for a long test ride? You'll like the scooter. I think it will probably give you 95% of the performance of a 170i. IF you can get that for 45% of the cost, why not?

Haha - Batman! I actually have a helmet, jacket and pants from my previous buddy. I'm not looking at buying a NEW 170i, but a used one. For example, there is a Mocha Brown 170i in Flagstaff, AZ with 200 miles on it for an asking price of $1900. That's a deal, and it might be even lower after negotiating. I guess what I need to decide on is how long do I wait for the perfect deal, and is it worth it? And would I prefer a Carb over FI in the end because of the kickstart feature? Is there a big speed difference between the 150 & 170i? My buddy 125 couldn't handle the hills here and it was tough sometimes. I'm only 155lbs, btw.

IMO the kick start and carb are huge. At 155, you could tune your CVT and clutch springs and I think you would get similar performance to the 170i.

I ended up with my 170 because it was for sale at the same time I had decided on a Black Jack. I had the seller of the BJ at $1400 with 4,000 miles on it. I was so sure I was getting this scooter I bought a regular seat for it off Ebay. At the same time there was a 2014 Green (the fastest color of the 170) with 90 miles on it. She wanted $2,500. They were both about an hour away from me, and I already had a trailer lined up for the weekend. I thought before I commit to the Black Jack let me throw a low offer to the 170 owner. I got the 170i for $2,000. I really wanted the Black Jack because of stock performance upgrades. I was lured to the 170 because of the low mileage and less than a year old.

I have a theory that you need at least a 3 month test ride until you know for sure.

Go in with cash and try and get the 150 for $1,500. Be prepared to walk. You can always go back tomorrow if you decide to spend more.

aHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MANNNNNNN!!! That would be my dream! A blackjack for $1400?????? That is honestly what I am really holding out for. I've ridden the 150 International and Blackjack side by side on the same day and the Blackjack is the best riding experience I have ever had. This scooter I am looking at is about 45 minutes away, so we have already had the discussion about price. They are holding firm at $1700, after coming down from $2000. I think I would be okay with the purchase, but not elated. I would also kick myself if I had to make two trips in our minivan because I am a gas miser!!

Get the Pampalona and put on the upgrades yourself. Parts are about $300. Sure, it's not a blackjack, but every one I see is either trashed, or the person has 500 miles on it so they want $2900 for them.

Thank you for the reply and comments! I test rode it and everything seemed fine, but for some reason I started feeling really doubtful about it, so I passed. Maybe I'm getting too old and have too much responsibility to be riding around again on 10" wheels. I haven't ridden in 3 years, and this scooter didn't have a windshield and all I could think about was hitting that pavement. It was in really nice shape though for being 8 years old.

I started riding in the early 80's with a Vespa Primavera. My brother and I even drove out to Scooterville in Anaheim from Denver one weekend so we could pick up Vespa parts. I took a long time off from two wheels until I stumbled across a 1976 Vespa at a yard sale about 6 years ago. It was dirt cheap, but hadn't been run in a couple of years. I was done with scooters at this point, but I knew I could buy it clean out the carb and probably flip it and make some decent money. We brought it home and got it running. I was riding it around the neighborhood and to the grocery store. I told my wife "it's running great, time to put it on Craigslist". She said why don't you keep it. Look at how much fun you're having. I said I can't keep this. It's a toy. We have two kids, every road around us is 45mph. Boy am I glad I listened to her. That garage sale vespa is long gone, but I have racked up over 30,000 miles on two wheels over the last 6 years. A lot of the people I regularly ride with are retired. Take the motorcycle safety course, wear the correct safety gear and get out and enjoy yourself. As an added bonus, think of the money you'll save on gas.

What a cool story! Thanks for sharing it. Yes, I have 3 small kids and wonder about the safety of things. The main road off my neighborhood is a highway where people generally go 55-65. I only have to be on that road for about a mile or less, but still....What I would really like to do is find such a good deal that I can buy it, get all the scooter riding out of me and then re-sell if I need to. I'm just going to stay on my perch and watch for that deal! I found a cool resource called "Scooter Finds" that works pretty good in locating scooters.
