Check oil right after stopping engine?

Post by mike932 »

I have always checked my oil at least five minutes after turning off the engine to allow the oil to settle. But the Buddy manual states to check oil RIGHT AFTER running the engine. Which is correct? See page 23 of this link....

I read it as "after" not "right after."

From the manual: Check engine oil level after engine has been running 2-3 minutes. Be sure scooter is on level ground.

One could argue that the engine should still be running...

The manual is a bit vague. How long after the engine has been turned off before it actually becomes, "before the engine is turned on"?

We need a 'checking you oil' seminar... or a weekend training camp?

Geez, I always check oil before starting an engine, any engine. You wanna know how much you have in the pan once everything has drained into it. Waiting a few minutes after shutting the engine is OK too. But while it's running? Between the oil that's circulating and the splash on the dipstick, I don't think you'd get anywhere near an accurate reading.

It would be ridiculously over filled if you checked it while running then filled it after that. I was pointing out how vague the manual is. Bonus points if you check it while riding down the street.

If you check the engine while cold, the dipstick should be right at the top of the full line. That's how I check mine.
