170i

Post by luckyscroller788 »

What year did the Buddy start coming out with the 170i models? AND, where there many problems with them in the first couple years? Thanks, Dale

I believe the 2012 was the first model year. From what I have read the only problem was in the computer and it is an easy fix at the dealer, they just have to update the firmware on the ECU. I can't comment on how reliable they are long term. Last year I search the internet to see if anyone has put some serious miles on one, but the most miles was in the 10-20k area.

As far as durability and reliability it's hard to beat a Buddy 125, and it should have enough top end speed for 99% of the group rides.

We have a 2007 Buddy 125. That was the second year for the Buddy in the US. It has been absolutely reliable from day 1 and still is. I can't see any reason to shy away from a 2012 170i.

Very reliable. I have 125's, but 2 friends with 170's that ride a lot and they have had zero issues.
Speed is only a matter of money...How fast do you want to go?

I had absolutely zero problems with my '12 Buddy 170i. I sold it earlier this year only to buy a '15 Hooligan 170i because of its bigger frame, dual rear shocks and 12" wheels and tires. It handles the poor roads in NW Tucson much better than the 10" wheeled Buddy 170i.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't sure if getting one of the earlier year models would be a mistake or not, if the right deal comes along.
And Erik, the reason I ask about the 170i is because my wife shops diufferently than I do... She shops by color! She really likes the mocha colored Buddy, which is a 170i. We were in MAC on Saturday to pick up my Roughie (that was in for an overcharging issue) and she once again looked that mocha one over and really likes it. I know of another dealer with one a couple years old but still new, and I am working on a price, and if they come down a smidge more, I may pull the trigger on it, even though I generally like to support the local dealer, but I also need to look out for my bottom line too. If we get that mocha one for her, I'm thinking I can maybe convince her that I need the Vespa gts300 Super Sport!!!!

took the plunge today, Drove a few hours, and picked up a still new mocha 170i for a great price for my wife. Now... to get her convinced on the 300gts for me....
I am a fairly big dude, 5'10 and 275lbs (ouch),I'm sure a 170 could lug my fat ass around ok, and I had a Hoolie on my shortlist for me, but I don't like the floor space for my big size 14 feet, and today I sat on a blur a bit, and REALLY didn't care for the footroom on that ride, plus the seat on the Blur was so hard I felt like I was sitting on a big hunk of firewood.I haven't really sat on a gts300 to get a feel for it, but I do think I would like the more room for my feet. If not... the place I picked up the mocha today still has a couple more new 2012 and 2013 170's, as well as one 125 left on sale, I may just have to take another drive out there.
