I just painted my wheels black.

Post by Deuce »

I think it makes the bike look meaner and heavier. I love it!!! :D

I realize it won't last, but i'm pretty crazy and I'll keep touching them up.

Hopefully this link will work.

did you have to prime it? did you use clear coat for the finish? did you use a special paint for rims like Duplicolor or something like this Rim Paint?

Hey Deuce, how tall are you? I've never sat on a buddy, but from the pictures with you on the scoot, looks like there isn't much room left for a passenger.

You really need to go to metro scooter then!

The buddy has plenty of passenger room, the passenger sits behind you, and they rest their feet on the silver foot pegs, usually they are silver, but I think he repainted those also back then. It's the jagged metal stubs on the back of the floor boards.

Your wheels look cool!
Why won’t they last?
If prepared properly and allowed to cure the paint will last.

Thanks guys!

Corsair,
I painted my wheels with a friend who had experience painting wheels on a porsche he messes around with.

we did not need to prime it. We took the wheels off, which was pretty easy. (Had to remove the muffler). Then we taped the wheels off and used some steel wool to rough up the original wheel finish. Then we just painted them with Krylon automotive engine paint. Same thing as the Duplicolor your talking about (3 or 4 thin coats). Any rim or wheel paint would work. IMO, the key is semi gloss finish.

Cincycaddy,

5'9"or so. IMO there is room for a person back there, but it isn't the same as riding alone. you have to scoot up a tad. (no pun intended)

Rajron, of, course, i hope your right. However, since these are spraypainted by a novice rather than powdercoated or dipped or something like that, some chipping will inevitably occur.

I DID use the correct type of paint, though, and will let the buddy sit for a long time. It should be fine. We'll see.

As soon as I have the time I am getting my wheels powdercoated black. I can't wait. Your scooter looks amazing.

Very nice. Now I'm starting to feel bad that I have yet to start my own paint job of my rims.

how did you set your buddy when it had the wheels off.

i bought my scooter used, so it came with some rust from neglect. i need to fix it before it gets worse.

Good question. I set the scooter on a 6 x 6 (deck post width) scrap board right under the battery compartment which was suitably stable. When you do this you must be careful. This was my laypersons solution. Someone else might have a better one...
